If you are *really* into New Orleans music - of most types from any era - you will find something to like in this collection. It's not a starting point but more for the aficionado, if I might say that.

After listening to the amazing Billie Pierce track on God's Jukebox last week decided to download Lonesome Road. What was downloaded was a dire dirge version of Red River Valley. Not good Amazon!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A rich archive - must have! 27 July 2010
By perdedorita - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Spectrum Culture just published their review of this collection...

Says the reviewer:

"The album is audio archiving at its finest, again confirming Smithsonian Folkways' standing as one of the most trustworthy record labels in terms of musical preservation. Its packaging is stellar, if anyone cares about that type of stuff anymore, while the release's overall aesthetics are faithful to the styles and sounds of the New Orleans jazz and blues represented here. Its front cover is a reprint of Doc Paulin's Marching Band and the back cover is that of The First Kid Clayton Session; between those covers, period photos of musicians with nicknames like "Snooks" Eaglin and "Wolfman" Washington help put the listener in a Crescent City mindset. The liner notes written by Coppin State professor Robert H. Cataliotti contain background information about the origins of these recordings as well as a history of each track, are richly detailed and examine these songs from the perspective of how they fit into both African American culture and New Orleans folklore. "

3.0 out of 5 stars Great music, but all mixed up 13 Jan. 2011
By Charles C. Wohlers - Published on Amazon.com
Verified Purchase
This does seem to be an excellent overview of traditional New Orleans music. However, it is greatly hampered by the fact that the titles Amazon has for the tracks have been switched and rearranged for nearly every track. Hardly any are correct. Near as I can tell, the correct titles are:
1. Tiger Rag
2. Shine Hambone
3. Just a Little While to Stay Here
4. CC Rider
5. Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone
6. Lord, Lord, Lord
7. Take Your Big Leg Off Me, etc.
8. Back to the Time
9. Jimmy's blues
10. High Society
11. Shake It & Break It
12. Spooky Drums #1
13. Milenburg Joys
14. Clarinet Marmalade
15. Times Done Changed
16. St, James Infirmary
17. We Shall Walk through the Streets of the City - March
18. Corinna, Corinna
19. Careless Love
20. Dark Was the Night
21. We Shall Walk through the Streets of the City - Dirge
22. Red White & Blue Got the golden Band
23. Lonesome Road
24. Blackberries!
25. Bucket's got a hole in It
26. Rattlesnake Boogie

No promises that this list is correct. It is to be fondly hoped that Amazon will fix this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great sounds, but songs are not in same order as titles. 31 Dec. 2010
By D. Dugan - Published on Amazon.com

The songs are not in the same order as the track titles. For example, "Red White and Blue Got the Golden Band" plays on track 22, not 5 were it is titled. When played on an MP3, the wrong title shows for the song being played. If that bothers you, you might look elsewhere to buy this album.

As the producer and annotator of the cd, Classic Sounds of New Orleans, I thank the above reviewers for pointing out the problem with the download title/track sequencing. I contacted the Smithsonian Folkways marketing folks and the problem has been corrected. Laissez le bon temps rouler! R. Cataliotti
