Product Description

Product Description

Three classic horror films. In Roger Corman's low-budget classic 'A Bucket of Blood' (1959) Dick Miller stars as a coffee-bar waiter who receives acclaim as an artist for his amazing true-to-life sculptures. Little do his admirers know that he only achieves his realistic effects by murdering his models and covering them in clay. In 'House on Haunted Hill' (1959) Vincent Price makes an offer of $10,000 to anyone who will spend the night in his haunted mansion, whilst 'Ghoul' (1934) features horror stalwart Boris Karloff as a mortally ill obsessed Egyptologist who demands to be buried with a sacred artefact bound to his hand, and swears vengeance from beyond the grave should anyone try to remove it.

Considering that this is a DVD from a company which specialises exclusively in releasing public domain films and TV shows, there is something really surprising that needs to be said about this particular item. And that is that it includes the authentic MGM beautifully restored edition of "The Ghoul" - you can tell that it is right away when it opens with the newly-put-on MGM logo. It is in quite pristine condition, not a scratch or fleck on the image, no jumps from missing frames, not a bit of hiss on the soundtrack and it is the full uncut 80 minute version. How they managed to get this print for this release is anybody's guess, but it's here, so you don't have to go for a more expensive edition to get hold of it!

The film itself seems to take place just about entirely at night, and the house where a lot of it is set is a stranger to the modern convenience of electricity, preferring instead to use candles. So, it's certainly quite a dark film, owing a lot to the style of German horror films of the previous decade or so, and actually being photographed by a man who had worked on some of them. And it may not be one of Boris Karloff's greatest films, especially since (apart from one appearance early on for his death scene) he only shows up in the last half hour. But he sure makes the most of it during that half hour! Before that, it does tend to be a bit slow and some scenes should have been edited more tightly. But there is a supporting cast to relish, who all have great moments: Cedric Hardwicke, Ralph Richardson in his film debut, Kathleen Harrison for the comedy (and looking remarkably young here!), and the peerless Ernest Thesiger (and I'm still not sure whether he's doing a Scottish or an Irish accent...and I have a feeling that he didn't know either!!!

A good little collection of overlooked old-style horror films rather than classics in my opinion.

First up is "A Bucket Of Blood" made in 1960 and for me, is the poorest of the trilogy on this dvd. Basically, the film is nothing more than a comedy horror that sends up the art world, which it does rather well. Although this film is the most recent of the three on the disc, it is by far the worst in terms of production. The visuals are fuzzy and the audio suffers from distortion. One for prosterity only.

** out of *****

The second horror is in my opinion an underated film, starring Vincent Price who has the perfect voice for late night chills. "House On Haunted Hill" was made in 1958, and Price plays a millionaire playboy who invites five guests to stay in a haunted house and offers them $10,000 if they spend the night. But all is not as it seems... The visuals and audio are very good and vastly improved on this second treat - and superb compared to the GMVS release of this film several years ago.

**** out of *****

The 1933 horror starring the legendary Boris Karloff in "The Ghoul" makes up the final film on the disc. Karloff plays professor Morlant who obtains a magic jewel which grants immortality to anyone who is buried with it. Morlant arranges this and his spirit arises to wreak revenge on his betrayers. This film could have been better if the supporting cast were not so theatrical and 'hammy' in their performances. Ernest Thesiger, he of "Bride Of Frankenstein" plays a good supporting role. Despite being the oldest film on the dvd by at least 25 years, the visuals and audio are stunning. No blemishes or 'cigar burns' and no crackles which you might expect on a film 80 years old this year.

Overall, for the cheap price that I paid the seller, I am pleased with the collection.

I got this box set with a main aim to see house on haunted hill. THis film , in my opinion is the best. Not very scary but interesting. A bucket of blood was very funny, how a cat manages to get stuck in a wall is beyond me. I still haven't made myself sit through the ghoul yet. I started to watch it but it seemed to go very slowly.

This DVD is great for anyone that is interested in looking at the wasys in which filming was made in the past. And definately worth purchasing

Funny enough it is The House on Haunted Hill and The Ghoul that gets all the love on this box set from fans, whilst Roger Corman's far superior effort divides them.

However A Bucket of Blood is the stand out reason to get this set- it is an excellent parody on the art world, all with a dash of horror and the great Dick Miller as lead guy. The script is very witty and it all works a treat. However the print isn't great but it is still watchable.

The Ghoul, I have always felt was overrated. Boris Karloff is and will always be my favourite horror actor- he's ok here, mind you he plays more of a cameo role. But it is the other wooden actors and a weak script that let the film down. However a plus point is that this cheap set actually includes the MGM superior print and the original running time of 80 mins- so all good.

Vincent Price I absolutely adore, but The House on Haunted Hill clearly wasn't his best film. It gets off to a great start and slowly declines to almost self parody.

All in all considering I love old horror movies I felt let down. Give me Price in House of Wax or a Corman movie any day. And give me Karloff in a Val Lewton one- far superior content.
