I need to stress at once that the music on this set is terrific: 4 prime albums of Quincy Jones' work at this relatively early stage in his career - 3 leading big bands playing his sharp arrangements, and the other with 3 quite different septets. And the musicians whom he employed on all 4 albums were from the top-drawer, including Art Farmer, Joe Newman, "Sweets" Edison and, above all, Clark Terry (t), Phil Woods and Gene Quill (as), and Zoot Sims and Lucky Thompson (ts) in the big bands, and "Sweets" Edison, Jack Sheldon and the Candoli brothers (t), Art Pepper, Charlie Mariano and Benny Carter (as), Bill Perkins and Buddy Collette (ts) and Pepper Adams (bs) among the septets. BUT there are problems as regards the first album on CD2. It would appear from the set's cover that this may be "The Birth of a Band - Vol 2" because the cover of that album is depicted there. But it is clear from the liner notes that the material is from the more famous "The Birth of a Band", which is a terrific album. BUT 2 tracks are not what they may appear: "Moanin'" and "Happy Faces" were on the original "Birth of a Band", but the versions that appear on this set are, in fact, alternative - and plainly inferior - takes which Japanese research brought to light a quarter of a century later, and which were issued as part of the "Vol 2" album. In addition, 2 other tracks under this album - "Whisper Not" and "The Gypsy" (tracks 7 and 8 on CD2) - are faulty. Both have random clicks, and the second has some sound distortion: not devastating, but certainly annoying. (The supplier let me have a second copy, which had the same faults.) If these points do not bother you, I would urge you to go ahead and buy this set because the music is wonderful and the price is low.Read more ›

By Glenn Cook HALL OF FAMETOP 50 REVIEWERVINE VOICE on 5 May 2012
Amazon do not have a track listing nor which classic albums are on this set so her it is.
I've also put a link in to another set that may be of use.

For a review proper if there is still none on Amazon UK may I suggest you try Amazon Com the USA version to see if there is a good one there?

They often have really detailed info on the sound reproduction and other stuff.
