Lino Ventura and Jean-Paul Belmondo star in this early 1960s French Italian crime drama adapted from the novel by José Giovanni. Abel Davos (Ventura), a gangster wanted for murder, has been hiding out in Italy for the last decade. After getting married and having children he feels ready to return to his native France but making it back home proves difficult. He ends up getting separated from his wife and finds himself on the run from the police with his two sons. After calling in a favour, however, he is assisted by fellow gangster Eric Stark (Belmondo) who tries to help them complete their journey without getting caught.
tra i noir francesi questo film ha fatto scuola.Peccato, per me,che i dialoghi in italiano siano veramente pochi.tuttavia il film è godibilissimo e avvincente.Non ho trovato alcun elemento negativo:grandi attori.
A very effective crime drama / thriller with Lino Ventura playing a self-interested and utterly amoral murdering gangster. He outwits his former associates who try to kill him. Jean-Paul Belmondo plays a loner who forms a friendly association with Ventura, but he may not be all that he seems It's effectively a French version of an American film noir, but with a harder edge. It's also great to see these two influential French actors together in the same film and that in itself is good enough reason for seeing it. .
A wonderful film with a superb performance by the great Lino Ventura. The print quality of the DVD ( I have not watched the Blu-Ray version ) is almost flawless - just an odd imperfection here and there. I love this genre of French film making and this movie is up there with the best of them. If you love French "policier"/ gangster movies then this is an essential purchase. It's a classic. Don't hesitate, buy it!
This really is a fantastic film which, like so many French films of the period, deserves a proper Region 2 release. In the meantime this region 0 release is great, as long as you can put up with the distinctly American translations. Lino Ventura and Jean-Paul Belmondo both put in great performances and the atmosphere of the film is fantastic. You won't regret purchasing it!
