Doug Nicholls was born in 1956.

In 1976 he joined the Community and Youth Workers' Union and in 1987 was elected the union's General Secretary.

He held this position until 2012 when he was elected as General Secretary of the General Federation of Trade Unions a position that he still holds.

From 1984-1994 he was Secretary of the Coventry Trade Union Council.

In 1984/85 he was Secretary of the Coventry Miners' Support Committee.

He is Secretary of Trade Union Friends of Vietnam and a member of the Venezuela Solidarity Campaign Executive and the Freedom for Ocalan campaign.
