A Clash of Spheres (Sir Robert Carey Mysteries Book 8) Kindle Edition

It's late August, 1592. Sir Robert Carey, cousin to Queen Elizabeth from the wrong side of Henry VIII's blanket, remains at his post on the Borders at Carlisle. He has at last been confirmed by his monarch as Deputy Warden and is still deeply in love with Lady Elizabeth Widdrington while despising her elderly, abusive husband (will the man never die?). Carey remains estranged from his dour but lethal henchman, Henry Dodd, after Carey decided, much to Dodd's bafflement, to take the high road during an incident at Dick of Dryhope's tower and 'honourably and skillfully avoided the bloody-pitched battle'.
The King's courts are full of sycophants, former lovers bent on revenge, a would-be assassin, a toothdrawer (and philosopher, too) who all gather in Edinburgh, where a great debate on the differences between the Ptolemaic and the Copernican systems, and a demonstration of the planets will be staged. Then a clash of spheres mirroring the same at the human level ensues...

Product description
Review
"The court of Elizabeth I once more outpaces today's politicians for cunning, effrontery, and vengeful machinations. As usual, Chisholm moves effortlessly from fascinating historical background to philosophical musings to violent action."--Kirkus Reviews --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.

This story carries on from where we left off at the end of "A Chorus of Innocents", in the north of England. Carey, having finally received the queen's warrant as Deputy Warden, is sent into Scotland by Sir Robert Cecil to help to defuse the very real threat of a Spanish invasion. Our old friend Simon Anriques is with him. He has been invited to explain his view of cosmology to King James and his court. They are accompanied by Sergeant Dodd, who is still in a strop. We also get to spend more time with Janet Dodd, who is as remarkable as her husband.
In King James' court we are introduced to his Danish wife, Queen Anne, a very young woman clearly brought up to be a royal consort.
I'm not going to tell the story; read it! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Set not only in the Reiver ravaged Border Country of England & Scotland but also the Scottish Court of James 6.
With all the intrigue we have come to expect from this Author, coupled with humour & gore, whats not to like.
Like all good serials we are left on the edge of our seats wanting more.
Is The Courtier going to have a liaison with Mrs Dodd ?
Mind you, getting on radio 4 and talking with the book luvvies through your arse about your `art` always puts me off.....
Keep writing Patricia you are wonderful :)
I like this series and the interesting sub plots weave a typical entwined tale. With this one though it feels like some b*****d has ripped out the last fifty pages out of spite. There you are wondering how it is all going to end and suddenly it does, with half the plots still hanging. This is not like a clever way to tease you to come back but more like the author has run out of time or has been called away to his ( or her) dinner and can't be arsed to finish it. Most odd! Still a good book but brace yourself for irritation!!
