Product Description

Product Description

A three-disc compendium of classic British children's TV programmes made by Smallfilms: The Clangers-those weird creatures from the early '70s voiced by swanee whistles, living on their planet of cheese that they share with the Soup Dragon and the Iron Chicken. 'Bagpuss, dear Bagpuss, old Fat Furry Catpuss, wake up and look at this thing that I bring.' so began every episode of Bagpuss. Made in 1974, it was to become one of the most popular childrens series in the uk ever, despite only comprising 13 episodes in total. A fat old toy cat in a second hand shop presides over a series of creatures that come alive to discuss the item the mice have brought before the cat. Ivor The Engine was the Thomas The Tank Engine of his day - a heavily welsh-centric animated engine from 'the top left corner of Wales'. The voiceovers were hilariously country Welsh and the characters named after the old welsh naming system: Dai Station, Evans The Song, Jones The Steam etc.

Synopsis

This is wonderful animated television, taking the viewer back to simpler times. There is no shouting, no "celebs" (vacuous nobodies), just clean fun. The animation is basic, but charming. Oliver Postgate had a lovely voice, warm and inviting.
The big gripe with this 3 dvd set, which looks great as a package, is that the claim to have all the Ivor the Engine's ever made in colour. The box lists 24 episodes, but only goes up to 17 on the actual dvd, missing out some lovely episodes, and only playing therefore for just over 2 hours, not over 3 hours as it should. Be warned!

Ivor the Engine here has ALL of the colour episodes as promised, but none of the black-and-whites. Check for other sets on Amazon, too, especially for the Clangers.

According to the internet Ivor the Engine has 40 episodes
but be warned.
it only has 16 epsiodes on the dvd despite showing only 24 on the back cover.

It is true, there is some argy bargy over the amount/selection of episodes of some of these series.

The youngest children are happy, so this box set scores well by default! From a nostalgia point of view, I found Clangers to have not stood up so well to time and tides. Ivor even more so. However, Bagpuss and friends are still most excellent. Really quite timeless.

I bought this for my 5 year old son, (honest!), who is totally obsessed with all things trainlike. He just loves watching the Ivor section, and boy, did it take me back when I sat and watched it with him.

The Clangers and Bagpuss also brought my childhood back like it was only yesterday and I'd forgotten just how simple and sweet kiddies programmes were back then.

The quality of this is pretty good, and plenty of viewing time too, so I would say well worth the money.

A true step back in time!

These Oliver Postgate series have got such a following that it is easy to forget that you might just might buy them for your kids. So, afficionados should watch out for missing episodes, b/w footage etc. But if the question is 'Will my under eights love this?' then the answer is 'Yes'. Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. In fact Bagpuss alone got my 2 (9 and 5) through 1 and a half hours in a traffic jam. And Ivor is so calming that we used to let a sleepless 4 year old watch it till she dropped off. So, stop thinking of yourself and get it for the children!

I initially bought this for my daughter. But it's mummy and daddy who are getting the most out of it. Feeling stressed or bluesy? Pop this DVD on and feel the comfort washing over you...aahhh! No really, it's great.

I can't imagine that anyone who knew what they were buying would be disappointed. Fantastic value and perfectly good quality. I'm enjoying watching them second time around as much as my 22 month old daughter is for the first time.
