I've been a fan of Tindersticks for years, and have loved the cinematic aspect of their music. They previously released two CDs of soundtrack music - "Nenette et Boni" and "Trouble Every Day" - plus a third disk of their music - "Marks Moods" - was assembled as a promo to try to get them more jobs in this field. However, the band have also produced four other soundtracks for Claire Denis ("L'Intrus", "Vendredi Soir", "35 Rhums" and "White Material") but these have only now been made available in this set.

The first thing you notice is the box. The five CDs are all enclosed in cardboard sleeves, each featuring a picture, presumably a still from the relevant film, and the track listing on the reverse. There is also a thick book, again featuring some pictures from the films, plus an article about the band and their work with Denis, printed in both English and French. The box containing these is CD sized but maybe 2-3 times as thick as a normal CD, and is made of a kind of brushed card inlaid with silver foil. It looks nice on a shelf :-)

As for the music itself the 190 minutes or so are largely instrumental, only a handful of tracks featuring Stuart Staples' unmistakable voice. Fans will probably already own "Nenette et Boni" and "Trouble Every Day", and the other disks (note that "Marks Moods" is not included in this set) are essentially more of the same, lushly arranged (particularly Dickon Hinchliffe's solo soundtrack for "Vendredi Soir"). As with most soundtracks the music works best as background rather than active listening, and I've listened to the set in its entirety today whilst working. Very enjoyable it was too.

If anyone is wondering, the fabulous vinyl box set version of this release does include MP3 download codes for each album. It is a fine package indeed if a bit pricey!

...OK that is not totally true - there are a scant few vocal snippets but spread very thinly over 6 films on 5 discs (of which several whole discs don't feature Mr Staples' voice at all).
The lack of (almost) any singing does serve to illustrate what very talented musicians the rest of the band are - see for example disc 3 containing the brooding and lovely 'drum and bass' (so to speak) music from the films 'Vendredi Soir' (2002) and 'L'Intrus' (2004). You'll also find here (briefly!) the ever amazing Terry Edwards on Trumpet.

It is also worth noting that not all the band are on each of the discs - 'Vendredi Soir' for example is just Dickon Hinchcliffe + a variety of violinists and a cellist.

This 5 CD set (complete with extensive notes - half of which are in French) is a lovely thing to behold and the music is highly atmospheric - however it is not something that is easy to simply sit and listen to. At times it feels a bit like when you buy a single only to find it contains 5 instrumental remixes of the same tune instead of some choice B-sides. It is after all film soundtrack music and frequently it really sounds like it (lovely but rarely demanding of your full attention).

As Staples himself says in the notes: "...we decided on a palette of sounds - vibes, piano, the organ, drums and bass - and tried to keep within that kind of combo, reacting to the fim. Whether we got there, I don't know."

Nice to have on in the background (rather than essential listening) - really only for the Tindersticks completist though.

A beautiful set of Tindersticks soundtracks. A little different form their regular albums, but it all works as a fine companion to the rest of their discography. This is truly music to lose yourself in.

If you have been listening to different albums of this group, and you like it, then you'll enjoy this wonderful collection of soundtracks.
This edition contains a book that explains their relationship with the film director Claire Denis.
However my suggestion is, if it's possible, to listen to some songs before buying it.
