What a fabulous idea, literature presenting cities! The City-Pick series does just that, giving the reader a taste of some green olives, a sliver of fabulous ewe's milk cheese, a morsel of spicy sucuk: a delicatessen counter for the reader. A selection of excerpts from writers local and foreign, seamlessly translated if originally written in any language other than English.
I've been handing out these books as Christmas presents. Do go out and buy your own if you're not on my list!

I took this along with the Rough Guide to Istanbul on my trip to the city this summer. Despite the added weight of carrying both, this book never left my side. A great selection of passages which give added insight into the way the city 'ticked', and which made the experience all the better for it. Particular favorites include a 19th century visitors journey into the Basilica Cistern, plus three passages covering the characters crossing Galata bridge in different ages.

Highly recommended.

Format: Paperback
this book contains several different essays about Istanbul but they are all written by people who are 'captivated' 'enthralled' besotted by the city. It would be far more interesting to have included some different experiences or opinions of the city. The writers are all renowned writers and write competently. It isn't attempting to be a regular travel book or a history of Istanbul but comes over as a paeon to the place. For those who are enchanted by Istanbul and want to just sigh and coo alongside fellow afficionadoes it would almost certainly be a complete treat. But ... any portrait which doesn't have warts 'n' all can never work as an interesting book for me
