Review

"Scary, exciting, and brilliant." (Susan Price)

"This wonderful book by Celia Rees is divided into two sections, Halloween and Midsummer, with a different tale in each, and is every bit as good as her fans have come to expect. When Davey, his sister and twin cousins go on a ghost walk in London for his birthday, they end up in the creepy parallel world inhabited by ghosts. A well-conceived and executed ghost story, this one had me watching the shadows in my room, as the idea of the parallel world became more clear. This spooky and atmospheric reading of City of Shadows will entertain most readers. The musical introduction leads the listener into the underground world of the old city, with its ghosts, ghouls and spectres. Jerome Pride read it well with just a hint of trepidation as the children go on a trip guaranteed to haunt and terrify the unwary. Davey's voice is given a fearful quality, which encourages the listener to empathise with this character and feel for him as he strives to save his companions. Listening to the story after reading the novel some time ago, gave me the same creepy feeling as the children fight a life and death battle with the dead beneath the streets. It is a well-written story, engagingly told." (Fiction Focus)
