Firstly this is a review of the version of the movie available for streaming on Prime Video as at the time of writing the review, and is being left on that product, Amazon may choose to add this review to other versions where is it less relevant.

This is a good quality HD transfer of this film, were I to buy a Blu Ray with this quality I would not be disappointed. The only audio option is Cantonese, and English subtitles are "baked in".

As to the film itself; the reason I say don't start here is that this is Hong Kong action comedy, quite deliberately, turned up to eleven. Even for a film of a comic book the ham acting in City Hunter goes above and beyond, the humour is reminiscent of Benny Hill, and there is blatant homophobia. I would strongly urge watching some of Jackie Chan's less unsubtle films to get a feel for Hong Kong cinema and it's conventions before watching this film.

With the negatives out of the way, this is still an enjoyable film, provided that you accept it as a product of a different time and place, that speaks a different language, both literally and figuratively. The athleticism of Chan and the rest of cast (and their stand ins) is stunning, the stunts are good, and the "Street Fighter" fight sequence is a classic, though the final fight is actually better.

This is not Jackie Chan's best film, but it is a film that features him in his prime as a physical performer, so well worth a watch for fans.

Jackie Chan fans might not like this film if you dont like cartoonish and offbeat slapstick humour. From start to finish there is non-stop comedy and over the top action sequences unusual from Chan's usual films. Everything in the film is done in a over the top comic book style so it shouldn't be taken seriously.

Chan plays a private detective named Ryun (taken from the anime comic strip character of the same name) who has to track down a wealthy businessman's runaway daughter. On his way to finding the daughter on a cruise ship, he finds the ship taken over by terrorists played by Richard Norton and Gary Daniels. Chan's fight scenes with both Norton and Daniels are brilliantly choreographed. The highlight is when Chan and Daniels transform into characters from the arcade game Street Fighter.

I was unsure I would like this film after reading mixed reviews on it but I decided to buy it and I'm glad I did. I enjoyed it from start to finish and was laughing all the way through at the comedy.

There are an array of extras on the DVD with interviews from Chan, Norton and Daniels so its worth checking out.

Some say its homophobic. I think its patronising to women particularly focussing on their boobs. Its just not remotely funny. Why do the Americans not speak English? Action sequences and stunts are clever but not funny as they should be. It could have been so much better as a serious film. The computer game climax is just unbelievably awful.
