Eco-Drive: The Watch that Never Needs a Battery
Powered by Light
Eco-Drive is designed to convert both natural and artificial light into energy to power watches. This means that you do not require any battery replacement, charging or winding to maintain constant operation.

After quite a bit of research, I finally went for the Citizen Eco-Drive watch although I did have reservations about the size of the dial - but having seen it in a local jewellers, decided that although larger than my current timepiece it was not of the "big Ben" variety that some people wear these days! And, I have to say that this watch is certainly worth the outlay, and apart from it's solar powered Eco-Drive which eliminates the need for battery replacements, the piece comes with perpetual calendar and radio control meaning that once the timepiece is set, you need never bother with it ever again if you don't want to!( although there is a facility for automatic US time zones etc should you have the need)
Operation of the watch is very simple and intuitive and the CD rom and instruction book which come in the packaging will virtually be unused!
The alarm facility is also simple to use although as to whether it would prove to be useful is doubtful as it really has no volume to it and there is no volume gain control..but this is a minor quibble.
Having chosen this watch in black, rather than natural stainless steel , it will be interesting to see just how hard wearing the bracelet colouration will be - particularly that I tend to wear my watch all the time, rarely removing it - but if the overall quality of this watch is anything to go by, I am sure that the smart people at Citizen will have made sure that the bracelet is as durable as the main attraction should prove to be.
1 year on and this watch remains pretty much in pristine condition even though worn 24/7. The fear that the black ion coating would not be durable enough has proven to be ill founded!
And now 2 years on and having only come off my wrist a couple of times, the watch hasn't missed a beat and the strap and case remain in almost pristine condition - you can certainly buy this beautiful watch with confidence!
3 years on now, and apart from superficial scratches (that show no silver metal through black) this beautiful watch continues to impress all who see it - I simply love it - it really is the perfect timepiece and although not the cheapest, this really is quality with a capital "Q"
AHA - Amazon changed the image...and while it is better, it still doesn't do the timepiece justice!
Four years on and nothing more than just a couple of superficial scuffs with no silver metal showing through the black ion coating on the bracelet - I only take the watch off if I am working with heavy items that could cause damage (i.e. moving bricks / gardening etc) - I think the people at Citizen quality control deserve a big round of applause to achieve something this good for (relatively) little money!
Five years on and I have noticed only that where the clasp edge touches the first link of the strap that there are two points of contact where the black ion coating has started to wear and silver can be seen through...but if after 5 years all that is needed is a new strap to put this beautiful timepiece back into pristine condition, then all I can say is that for the money, this is the best timepiece I've ever owned! I paid £399 for this watch as at new, and while the guarantee covered me to this point, a cost of just around 22 pence a day until now is hardly a kings ransom for such a beautiful piece of engineering - nuff said!!
I bought this to replace a tired Tag Heuer and I'm very pleased with it.
Tip1: This watch operates completely electrically not mechanical.
Tip2: The best way set this watch:
1-One full day charging (At least)
3-Set zero position of indicators
4-set the clock
This watch is a little heavy and a tad bulky, but this only makes me think that it was built to last
