About the Author

Ruby Standing Deer has been a wanderer, and a journeyman newspaper pressman. She's spent years rescuing animals and learning from them. They've taught her that life does not have to be so hard, if you go with the flow and not against it. Her life revolves around writing and her family, which includes, of course, her animals. Two car accidents in the mid-nineties changed Ruby's life. She resented it at first, until understanding that she'd simply been put on another path. It was not an easy one, and continues to be a challenge, but she accepted it, and learns with each step she takes. Ruby writes because she's compelled to pass on knowledge. Her first book, "Circles," is more than just a story of family, or of the people who first settled in the Americas. It is a story of spirituality and the simple humor of everyday life, but also of the fear of the unknown. Life presents us a path; how we choose to navigate that "circle" is up to us. Watch for "Spirals," the sequel, Fall 2012. Find out more about Ruby at www.RubyStandinDeer.com.

Circles is the story of a young Indian boy who lives his life at the time of the first appearance of Europeans in North America. His tribe are known as the Fish People and live their lives peacefully in a canyon hunting, fishing and gathering without metals and where the horse is unknown.

The boy has been given the name 'Feather Floating on Water'. When we first meet him he is eight years old and lives with his grandparents, Hawk Soaring and Bright Sun Flower, and mother, Makes Baskets. They have a beautifully touching relationship and live in harmony with the world around them, giving as much as they take.

Feather is bothered by dreams however. His dreams warn of impending disaster as bearded men make their appearance in their world killing, enslaving and disturbing the harmony of the world as they go in search of gold. His grandmother, a wise woman of the tribe, helps him understand these dreams and guides him through his steps through childhood to an early manhood at age 14. The author takes pains to explain that not all of the bearded men are evil but most do not understand how to live in harmony.

Many in the tribe know Feather is a special boy and this belief is strengthened as Feather makes friends with a wild wolf and becomes a protégée of a holy woman fleeing with her group from the Europeans. Feather takes on a new name 'Shining Light' and leads his people, and other tribes, to a new land where they will be safe.

The story is strongly written and will appeal to those who believe that mankind should live in harmony with nature. If you expect savagery and blood - look elsewhere.

I quite enjoyed Circles, the lovely language of the Fish people, their Spirit Guides, and their struggle to survive. The story begins before the white man discovery of the new world. Feather Floating On Water is a little boy whose dreams haunt him. His grandma, Bright Sun Flower, guides the boy, hoping to prepare him for what's to come. As a holy woman, Bright Sun Flower is aware of the special gifts her grandson possesses and that he is destined to lead his people to the most difficult of times. But time is against her.

Feather Floating On Water is befriend by a wolf named White Paws who in his own way shows Feather who he can become. White Paws comforts him when the boy's dreams tell him of a terrible plight, of tribes decimated and destroyed, and how the boy must guide them into new lands. But can a boy's dream be taken seriously by the elders? And who is the lost tribe who comes in search of a Shining Light? Feather Floating of Water must grow up fast, must seek his Guiding Spirits and welcome their advice and gifts they offer. He must convince his people that danger is nearing and all will be lost if they stay behind.

This is not a story of war and action. Humor, Spirituality, and stories lead you through a book that has a surprise ending. This is a story of a boy who becomes a man before he is done being a boy, who must be one with the Earth and the seasons, the past and the future, to become a leader of his people. The lovely language, the setting, the strange customs and names of the Fish People blend into one vision of a past long gone.

The Fish People (as the tribe call themselves) bring Native American culture to life, allowing the reader to observe their day to day experiences and listen to the wise voices of the spirit guides first hand. Feather Floats on Water takes us back to an innocent age where family bonds, nature and spirit guides were a way of life. Maturing from a boy of eight to a young man destined to lead his people, he steers us through more turbulent times as the modern world impinges on their ancient one.

Individual characters stay with you after the story concludes, but it is the deeply insightful nature of these people which will linger longest after you close the book.

Circles truly emulates a time long past, but not so different from our own. The situations and struggles that we face today are played out in the past, and will have you on edge as you hope for the best! The characters in the book are very easy to relate too and will most likely remind you of people you know in real life. This book truly brings you in, and wont let you go. The ending, I am sad say had to come even though I wanted it to continue.

Circles is an example of life, and holds its own lessons within it's pages. It reminded me of lessons that we all tend to neglect in this, our modern age.

I don't want to reveal too much in this review, but you will not be disappointed. Overall Circles was a wonderful read for these long winter months, and I highly recommend it. Life is truly a circle, and this is but one of the teachings that this book holds.
