Product Description

Darkthrone are a legendary name in metal, inspiring countless bands throughout the years as one of the leaders of the Scandinavian black metal movement in the early 90's, alongside other greats such as Burzum, Immortal and Mayhem. In 2010 the unrelenting Norwegian duo delivered a new feast of metal and punk. From their thrash and death beginnings to their ascension to the pantheon of black metal greats, Darkthrone have always refused to stand still. They continue to embrace and explore their roots and capture the real spirit of sonic greatness on CIRCLE THE WAGONS; recorded by the band themselves at Necrohell II studios. Darkthrone sail against the tides of trend and disposable metal; uncompromising and defiant as ever - an ideology expanded upon by Fenriz when explaining the meaning behind the title: "The new metal decade starts with our album. It is a message to the Invaders of our metal domain to circle their wagons!!!" With our own brand of heavy metal/speed metal-punk we are a constant ambush on the modern overground metal traitors. Join us in our fight against instant gratification.... and let's see who stands when the smoke clears... Album by album we gnaw away at the overwhelming mass of so-called raw metal out there - well, the only time i saw something raw wrapped in plastic was when it was dead meat. And so in the long run, all raw bands with old raw sound wins - and your plastic paradise instant gratification sound vanishes with time. Die hard! "I hate, therefore I am" - Fenriz Artwork for the album comes once again courtesy of Dennis Dread, notable for his talents on previous Darkthrone albums, F.O.A.D and 2008's Dark Thrones and Black Flags, as well as for US greats, Abscess.

You have got to love this band, they do what they have always done: Exactly whatever they feel like doing. If they really wanted to they could put out another "Under The Funeral Moon", go on tour and make a whole bunch of money. But they don't want to so they don't. They once proclaimed that they were the "Fist in the face of god", I think that should be edited now to the "Fist in the face of modern metal". Metal has been in decline since the mid 90s aesthetically. Where did the metal go from heavy metal, it sounds more like heavy plastic now, with this ultra polished and glossy production that has crept into the genre and ruined a lot of what was great about it. Darkthrone remember what metal is suppose to sound like and have been tireless champions of the cause for a long time now. "Circle the Wagons" as the title would suggest is another call to arms in the battle against modern metal and the modern metal fan. This is another great album by Darkthrone.

By far their best album in the 'new' style. A good mix of songs on this one, taking the best bits from the previous albums in the punk/black metal style that they seem to be favouring these days. I have to say that even as a hardcore Darkthrone fan this change took me a while to get used to, but if they keep improving the new style things are looking good. Definatley worth buying if you like this genre, also would recommend this if you are a fan of bands like, Carnivour (pete steele's first band).

HASH(0x8ebb7d14) out of 5 stars Circle the Wagons 6 April 2010

The mighty Darkthrone once again deliver the metal goods in spades. No compromise, no mercy--100% METAL.

From the onset of the album opener 'Those Treasures Will Never Befall You,' it is evident that Darkthrone have all but shed the trappings of 'black' metal. Instead, the album brandishes a variety of traditional metal stylings, which pay homage to the metal greats of yore, while at the same time retaining the signature Darkthrone attitude and sound.

Fenriz has employed even more clean vocals this time around, most evident on the title track and 'Those Treasures Will Never Befall You.' They are used sparingly and tastefully though--they add to the epic feel of said tracks and reference the approach of Manilla Road. The few solos throughout C.T.W. are among the finest Darkthrone have ever recorded, especially on the brilliant 'Running For Borders,' played over a monstrous Sabbathian riff. And speaking of riffs, C.T.W. is a guaranteed head-banger.

The production is also top notch, and very much the same as it has been on F.O.A.D. and Dark Thrones & Black Flags; a very organic, live sound which balances all instruments/vocals in the mix while maintaining a raw edge. C.T.W. also demonstrates an important lesson which many metal bands have forgotten, which is how to write metal songs which actually rock. For those looking for familiar, orthodox black metal--look elsewhere. Darkthrone are operating on a level above and beyond any scene or stylistic pigeonhole.

Also, bravo to Dennis Dread for the awesome album artwork.

Highlights: Running For Borders, Stylized Corpse, Black Mountain Totem

Now this album is kinda weird, its not as punky as the last one and its not quite the Thrashy/Deathy Black Metal theyre known for, its somewhere in between.
I enjoyed this album very much altho I will say the vocals, by both members, could have been a little better but it doesnt take away from the album in general.
Also for those that buy the Special Edition the caricature of Fenriz and Nocturnal Culto is worth it alone lol.

Any music made by Darkthrone rules. I was thrilled to get my CD in the mail. It stayed in my player for weeks.
