Product Description

Based on the fairy story, Cinderella the musical was originally written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein for television, airing in the US in 1957 and attracting an audience of over 100 million! At the time it was seen as a vehicle for Julie Andrews, and although the original cast and orchestra gathered to record an album for Columbia Records, there were no plans to turn the story into a regular musical. A year later, however, Tommy Steele headed a British cast that also included Jimmy Edwards and Betty Marsden and, adding other Rodgers & Hammerstein songs along with an original written by Tommy Steele, and opened at the London Coliseum during the Christmas holiday season of 1958. The success of this version has ensured Cinderella remains part of the British way of life around Christmas time ever since….

This original cast CD from 1958 is excellent, and includes many stars from the 1950s including Yana and Tommy Steele. It is a snapshot of how music was in the 1950s, and the sound quality is excellent. Yana has very few of her songs on CD, and this shows what an excellent singer she was, having made such records as "Climb up the wall", "Mr Wonderful", as well as singing songs like "Blue Star", and having her own BBC TV show. On this CD, Yana sings "Lovely night" solo, which is brilliant.

This is an odd gathering of artists in the UK production of a successful Rogers & Hammerstein musical, combining Tommy Steele, Yana and Bruce Trent, the recognised singers, with comedians Jimmy Edwards, Kenneth Williams, Ted Durante and Betty Marsden. The stand out songs are perhaps My Own Little Corner and Do I Love You and No Other Love, which Ronnie Hilton took to the top of the charts in 1956. The definitive recording of this musical is the American staging starring Julie Andrews but for a touch of nostalgia and at a pretty low cost, this version is worth having

1.0 out of 5 stars HALLMARK RECORDS 14 Oct. 2011

Cinderella the London Cast was recorded in Stereo. Same with Fings Ain't Wot They Used To Be, both issued now in Mono by Hallmark Records. They don't tell you that the CD are in Mono. I'm sure there are others they are issuing that will be in mono. The London Cast of Cinderealla is an engaging score. Tommy Steele and the cast are wonderful. IT's a bit different than the TV scores. There are some songs not in the original TV scores that are in the London Cast. I would recomend this CD if you can get it in Stereo. There is no reason that in 2011 that we have to hear these cast albums in Mono.
