So as you can imagine I came to this book with foreboding, I prepared myself for disappointment, and was presently surprised. This is a wonderful book, the author keeps it light while still retaining an academic sincerity. The contents takes you through the whole of Cicero's life, with references to his speeches and political activity, a great book.
Dr Tempest strikes just the right balance between academic sobriety and getting on with the action, so this is an ideal introduction to the life and times of some of those who lived in a crucial period in the history of the Roman Empire.
Strongly recommended, a fascinating read.
What awaits us within these pages is, frankly, an extraordinary account of this fascinating and multi-talented Roman legend whose life story has been brilliantly captured and portrayed by the author.
Kathryn Tempest has such a uniquely engaging, free-flowing and sensitive writing style that by the end of the book you can't help but feel totally charmed and captivated by Cicero's life.
A profound believer in the Roman Republic, Cicero was perhaps its greatest ever advocate and stalwart. His life was set against the backdrop of Rome's increasingly rapid domination of geographical regions both near and afar.
As the book develops it becomes clear that Cicero's hopes for his nation and its system of government far exceed that which it is able to offer in return.
Should you have an interest in ancient Rome and it's history, I thoroughly recommend this one as a treasured reference to be returned to time and again.
It is a very enjoyable read that will simultaneously appeal to the novice, anyone with an interest in politics, or someone looking for more detailed information on Cicero and his life. I highly recommend it!
