I found this book very disappointing, particularly, given the glowing recommendations by some of the leading broadsheet newspapers.

Eritrea is a fascinating country with a very interesting history and story to tell. However, I found this account somewhat boring - with a tendency to focus almost exclusively on the stories of a few freedom fighters that Justin Hill met during the seven years he lived there.

The book also concentrates on Asmara and Keren, with very little detail or information about other parts of the country, which seems odd considering the length of time the author lived in Eritrea. Also very little insight into the coutryside, culture, or lifestyle of the average Eritrean.

For someone that worked as a schoolteacher, there is almost no content on school life, again focusing almost entirely on the fighters that he came to know personally.

In summary, I found the book dull and not very informative about Eritrea, its history and its people.
