Instructions are poor and need illustrations because initially I couldn't work out how to open the case. Basically the aluminium part is a tube or sleeve. The ends are plastic and a part of a one-piece full-length tray. So although mine was very, very stiff, it's a push-through from the front to get inside.
Once there it's a plastic tray with a small circuit-board at one end. On this is the SATA connector and the necessary power converter (12v to 12v/5v) Hint number one - is to slightly loosen the two black screws holding the circuit-board just to give a little extra "wiggle room" to slide your hard-drive in. Once it is plugged correctly, tighten back down carefully. Use the four silver screws to fix the base of the drive to the tray, push the tray back in the aluminium tube and fasten in place with the four black screws. Hint number two: don't stick the included rubber feet over the screws as indicated, not if you ever plan on opening the the case again or changing drives. I stuck mine to the sides of the small recesses.
In use the drive is quiet and fast. There is a blue LED on the back which only flickers if the drive is recognised by the host.
Annoyingly (bearing in mind a previous reviewer's problems) I couldn't get the drive recognised either, using an extension USB cable to the back of my computer. Even the supplied USB cable on its own direct to a USB 3.0 port was very flaky and if a file to be transferred was of any size (1GB plus), the transfer froze terminally.. Odd given that this is a powered drive. My smaller WD Elements 2.5" USB-only powered drive works fine on the extension without any help from a power supply. In the end I discovered this box was most reliable using a good quality USB 2.0 extension plugged in to the supplied USB 3.0 cable. Obviously speeds are lower because of this. But at least it is recognised reliably.
I've had to edit this review to take into account these problems. My initial happiness being soured.
Second edit to this review: The case has failed completely at 6-months of very sparse, back-up only usage.. Lights on but no hard-drive activity. Removed drive to check if it was that at fault but it operates normally via an eSata/Power unit. Conclusion, this caddy has conked,
So to sum up - never worked at USB 3.0 speeds and lasted almost spot on 6-months with little use.
1. USB 3.0 caddy for that money is totally worth it. Cheapest I was able to find.
2. Performs well as proper USB 3.0 device.
3. Supports 4TB harddrives.
4. Sleep function works (so many devices doesn't support that)
Conns:
1. Built down to the price. Very cheap injection molded plastic parts. Looks a bit untfinished as a product.
2. Aluminium housing cut isn't in 90degree angle as you may expect. Also was a bit bent.
3. PCB board inside had flux residue all over the place.
Conclusion:
If you are not planning to use it as your desk showpiece but for practical application - totally worth it! Very good value for money.

The hard drive slots into the chassis ok, and screws in, but then the case that surrounds the chassis doesn't fit properly. First it was a struggle to get the chassis into the case, and then the holes didn't line up properly to seal it properly. After getting 1 hole as lined up as possible, the screw barely got a grip before it stopped turning. Then I ended up grinding the head of the screw, and the supplied screw driver.
I have settled for it to just not be fastened shut.
Fitting: unpack the box, push out the drive tray, slot in your sata drive, use the silver screws to secure the drive, slide tray back into casing, use black screws to secure casing and lastly apply the for adhesive non slip pads.
Usage: the usb 3 cable along with the ac adapter cables are a bit short. However once plugged in the drive is recognised easily by Windows. File transfers were fast, though I did notice the drive casing getting a bit hot with use over an hour.
Overall:it's a good product for the price. There are better hot swappable hdd enclosures including 2.5 & 3.5 dual capability but they are a little more costly. Though this CIT casing did the job for what I required.
