This is a griping account of the life of Churchill in the war years. It boils down many of the hidden facets of this man - his boozing, his submissive manner towards a haughty Roosevelt who became the headmaster of the war against Germany, his mistakes (the Norway invasion, the breaking of the imperial preference imposed by the Americans, his ignorance of economics, the reckless bombardments of Germany as a way to forget Britain's poor performance in the battlefields, his lavish lifestyle while the rest of the population was under rationing of food, etc.)also with a riveting description of the whole apparatus of the British and American war effort, almost as if we were in the middle of the action, makes this book a classic of its own and an unforgettable account for those who read it.

Despite the adverse publicity surrounding the authors recent court case he has produced another book full of comprehensive refrences. With over 1000 pages almost a full 20% is given over to his refrences. Not always complimentary to Churchill we have to accept that the myth of Churchill was largely that wartime propaganda myth. This book shows some of these myths forwhat they are. This is the second in a trilogy of books. It must be at least 10 years since volume 1 came out it is to be hoped that volume 3 will not take as long to come out. whilst one may not agree with the authors alleged political beliefs there is no doubt that he remains a historian of the first magnitude.

This is a stunning book that should be on every bookshelf. A lot of stones are lifted, and a lot of nasty things are revealed about people we once looked up to. The two volumes together are one of the masterpieces of the Century.
