This is a delightful book for children of all ages; I have just finished reading it and will now put it away until 1st December 2018 when I will start it again. Highly recommended.
It ain't half dull.
Once you get the idea that this advent calendar book is a journey back in time with each day taking you closer to the birth of Jesus picking up, most days, a nativity character (a shepherd here, a king there, and few angels and plenty of sheep) you could put the book down because nothing much else of interest happens (even the modern day Palestine refugee angle that was shoehorned in was lame)
I'm pretty sure as a child I'd have found this book dull. As an adult, it had nothing of interest.
(As it was one of our book club nominations for December I'm curious to see if I'm the only Scrooge like person who failed to find much festive cheer in the book).
Having read all of Gaarder's other novels, I was expecting to enjoy THE CHRISTMAS MYSTERY more than I did. It is not unusual for Gaarder's novels to have two interweaving stories, but I felt that in this offering the second story was neglected. Although there was a charm to the short chapters, as each little piece of the mystery was delicately offered, after a while they did become slightly repetitive. So, as you read about the story of the Advent calendar and watch how that blossoms, the story away from the calendar gets puched aside, not really getting any focus until nearly two thirds of the way through.
THE CHRISTMAS MYSTERY is satisfying as a light-hearted Christmas diversion. However, there is not the same substance as his previous works.
I was very impressed by the quality of the book as it appeared to be brand new when I opened. it. The fact that it cost a fraction of the price of a new publication, and arrived on a Sunday, mean that I will certainly be buying books in this way again.
