Christmas Is Murder is the seventh in Arnold's McKinley Mysteries series. The solving of the mystery is a self-contained story so I could happily follow what was going on in this novella without having previously read any of the others. There are frequent hints to the backstory though and it wasn't until near the end that I understood why everyone seemed to let Sara and Sean McKinley get away with pretty immoral behaviour - they're on TV!

Our suitably seasonal tale gives Arnold the opportunity to create a perfect winter holiday atmosphere, American style, with a grand parade and lots of falling snow. I wasn't convinced by Sara's overriding desire to investigate the fire, especially as she had only met her neighbours the once, and the methods the McKinley's choose for their investigation didn't strike me as ethical or even completely believable. However, if you can overlook that, then Christmas Is Murder is a fun novella with lots of entertaining humour and a dash of romance too. Read it while listening to seasonal songs and with a glass of mulled wine, and you'll be in a Christmas mood in no time!

5.0 out of 5 stars "A Great Mystery Novella For The Holidays" 16 Dec. 2014

It's really Christmas time in Albany, New York, with snow flakes falling. Sara and Sean McKinley are looking forward to their first Christmas since they married. They and Jeannie and Leon, her adoptive parents, have just picked out their Christmas trees to decorate their homes. Before leaving the tree farm, they meet Maggie and Elbert Wilson who are neighbors to Sara and Sean they have yet to know. That is because Sara and Sean have been on an extensive trip to Europe. But Jeannie has met them as she house sat Sara's new home while they were in Europe. Her folks stop by their house for some warming hot chocolate and getting the tree set up, then left for their home in the snowy weather. Very shortly, fire trucks can be heard screaming not too far away. Sara was fearful it may be an accident involving her mom and dad. As they rush outside, they see massive smoke coming from the Wilson home. The fire chief tells them both Wilsons are dead, found on the couch in the living room. Until the investigation is complete, he believes they were sleeping and died from smoke inhalation. The Christmas cheer is gone, replaced with sadness. The Wilson's have a daughter but the fire chief cannot reveal her name yet. Sara always follows the obituaries in the newspaper and knows who to contact to learn her name. But Sara wonders how the fire started. Harold Fox, the fire chief, knows the McKinleys and their reputation of solving crimes. As prior police officers, Sean and Sara have much experience, with Sara, well, having a natural curiosity to know the rest of the story! This is a relaxed, fun read with an easy writing style to maximize your reading enjoyment. Sit by the fire, enjoy a cup of hot cocoa, a cat or dog nestled beside you, and read this good mystery. You can't go wrong!
