Format: Audio CD
This collection comprises the 12 tracks that were first released as the 1957 Capitol LP "A Jolly Christmas from Frank Sinatra" plus four extra songs. As well as being inappropriately named, the original LP was always a disc of two halves. On side one Sinatra offers classic renderings of some of the great Christmas songs - his versions of "I'll Be Home for Christmas", "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and Mel Torme's "Christmas Song" are among the best ever, and were never bettered than in these 1957 versions in lush arrangements by Gordon Jenkins. Side two is another matter: Sinatra never sounded happy in these settings of carols, and my copy of the LP was never much worn on this side.
The extras are what I take to be the 1954 recording of White Christmas (the inlay wrongly dates it as 1957), arranged by Nelson Riddle, plus three recordings from the Columbia catalogue, all arranged by Axel Stordahl: "Christmas Dreaming" dates from 1947, "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" 1948 and "Let It Snow" 1950.
All in all a worthwhile release: like the original LP, those classic tracks on side one make it one of the great Christmas albums.
Note that A Merry Christmas From Frank Sinatra seems to offer the same content with one additional track ("Winter Wonderland").

Thanks to Hugh Jarres for his comprehensive review of the original 1957 album release and other track sources of this CD.

Also for linking to another Sinatra Xmas CD which is the same repertoire plus a bonus track.

I would suggest that the Product Description provided by Amazon here is wrong - it referes to a different Xmas album - to the best of my knowledge neither Frank's kids and/or Bing Crosby feature on "The Christmas Collection" tracks.
