By Peter Durward Harris #1 HALL OF FAMETOP 50 REVIEWER on 7 Sept. 2009
Format: Audio CD
Although brass bands are by no means limited to Britain, they are a quintessentially British (or, more accurately, English) tradition. The Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band may date back in some form to 1858, but regards 1881 as its official year of formation, which is still 125 years before I wrote this review in 2006 (yes, it's dated 2009 because it sat on my old computer for three years, isolated from the world outside). The band had an unexpected UK number two hit (only Paul McCartney stopped them from being number one) around Christmas 1978 with Floral dance, an old folk tune, but they have recorded a diverse range of material that includes pop and rock tunes, military marches, gospel tunes, classical pieces and traditional folk music.

This collection of twenty Christmas tunes is presented in their typical style. If you remember Floral dance, you'll know what to expect. The track selection is dominated by carols that are popular in Britain, although there's one tune (Christmas awake) that I don't recognize. I look forward to hearing a vocal version one day.

This is a wonderful Christmas album from one of the best and most famous brass bands in the world. It neatly complements another Christmas album by a famous brass band, the Grimethorpe White Christmas album, which mostly focuses on the festive songs rather than the carols. That album includes three carols not featured here (When a child is born, Little drummer boy, Mary`s boy child) and includes parts of other carols in two medleys. Apart from the pieces in those two medleys, there is no duplication between the Grimethorpe album and this one.

Bought this as it reminded me of traditional Christmases past, and listening to the playlist found them all enjoyable, played to a high standard, relaxing, and got me very much into the spirit of my kind of Christmas.

A delight to listen to during the Christmas celebrations. The World famous Brighouse and Rastrick band play many of the most popular carols and the arrangements are superb.
If you like Christmas carols and brass bands then this is THE album for you. If you are unsure then still give it a whirl as I think that it will not disappoint.
Many friends and neighbours have listened to it when they have visited me and, whilst they are not brass band connoisseurs, they have all expressed delight at the bits of it that they have listened to.

An excellent CD from a very good brass band. Just the ticket over Christmas and makes a great antidote to Slade and all the other terrible stuff that you're bombarded with! All the classic carols you'd expect, recorded very well.

A fantastic Band, we go to all their local concerts, especially the Christmas Concert. This CD now gives the feeling of Christmas every time we play it. Every one who loves Brass Bands or Silver Bands it is a MUST to purchase.
The quality of their playing & sounds is excellent. Well done.

Very disappointed. I bought this as a present for an Australian friend over in the uk. I particularly wanted that cd case cover to remind him of the uk scenery. Unfortunately it is a different cover and it was not sealed so I am under the impression this is a copy and not new.

In the year of punk the biggest sellers were Paul McCartney with Mull of Kintyre and a brass band founded in the 20s.
Brass Bands have always been associated with Christmas and a Salvation Army one was used for the Chas & Dave Christmas album.
The B & H Band had a No 2 hit single with the Floral Dance which also charted for Terry Wogan and led to him actually making an album and it may have been the reason why the Transatlantic label put out the B & H version seeing as Wogan's was seen as a joke.
Here you get all the famous traditional carols of the season
