This isn't quite as expected. From reading about this dvd I was expecting a programme about how Germany celebrates Christmas, past and present. That's not really correct. Firstly Germany (or indeed anything German) isn't even mentioned for the first ten minutes! In fact the first third of the entire film is purely an educational introduction to the religion of Christmas and Christianity, a hefty chunk of the programme time when you realise that the film itself is only forty-five minutes long, which makes it pretty expensive at a cost of almost fifteen pounds! The other thirty minutes is a rather odd mix, a fair bit of rambling about one single Christmas market and its history, plus a good ten minutes in a toy museum, with lots of shots of the inside of a dolls house (quite what this has to do with Christmas was beyond me). In addition, several shots and scenes are repeated several times, which I did feel was a bit of a swizz in such a short film. For example there was one shot of a little snow covered church in the countryside, which was lovely the first time, and maybe even the second time, but when the exact same shot appears four or more times in forty-five minutes you start to think `hang on a minute..'! The same happened with another shot of a town centre with its archway and hotel, twenty minutes later, there it was again. Oh, and again! (I think you're getting the picture!). There are also a fair few extended still shots (nativity/toys/paintings etc) that just seem to stay on screen for ages accompanied by Christmassy organ music. Quite simply, the whole thing could have easily been condensed down into twenty minutes without losing any info. But would you pay almost fifteen pounds for that? Probably not!Read more ›

How anyone, other than the producers, could give a positive review of this film is beyond me! In fact, I totally agree with the negative reviewers. This film is conpletely disappointing. The best part is the picture on the box which encouraged me to remember the sort of film the BBC has occasionally shown at Christmas, such as that with Jose Carreras: "Silent Night" which, in one half hour programme achieved so much more than did this DVD in its additional time. Repeat scenes, sleepy dialogue to accompany pen drawings, poor video footage, and plenty of "padding" makes this the film of Christmas to avoid. A Fifth form media student could have done better. The only reason to produce such mediocre material must surely be as a profit vehicle.

What fun we in Britain miss out on at Christmas. Gone is the real 'magic'.
'Advent and Christmas in Old Germany' shows exactly what we're lacking. It makes you want to uproot yourself every winter, travel over there for a few weeks, join in, and enjoy a traditional Old German Christmas. A family Christmas like it should be.
Failing actually going there, this DVD brings the magic to life. It's captivating.

I had to wait for at least six months, after I placed my order, before the item was finally available. Christmas was long over but I wanted to watch the video. Too bad for me. It would not play in any of my dvd players. In fact one player had to be disconnected and reconnected to the power before it would play any other dvd. This really sucks because I truly wanted this dvd. It was meant to bring back memories of the Christmas seasons I spent in Germany.
