This is a beautiful book. The reflections are inspiring and thought-provoking. I absolutely love Stanley Spencer’s work and this is a wonderful way to reflect on the life of Christ. I used this book as part of my reading preparation for preaching on Matt 4:1-11. It was a valuable resource and is also personally uplifting. I will return to it again.

I have all of Bishop Stephen Cottrell's books and am glad to have this too. Why not five stars? Only because of the paintings: I can never quite make up my mind about Stanley Spencer!

An inspiring read that makes you want more. The illustrations are brilliant in Kindle-better than in the printed page. You can enlarge them and see all the detail that the author writes about. The chapter about The Scorpion was such an insight into Christ's wilderness time, a deep and awesome insight into God and prayer. I loved the newness, the freshness of this theological reflection.

This was an excellent book for Lent. The pictures are clear on Kindle fire and my laptop. It is necessary to see the pictures to appreciate the commentry on them. An uplifting read. Well done Bishop Stephen!

Stanley Spencer is not an easy artist to come to terms with. His compositions used in this book have been useful for discussion within our Lent Group. I am certainly not sure that I can always agree with Stephen Cottrell's observations.
