Unlike the previous reviewer I did not stick with this book because it was Anne Rice, but because it was about Jesus... from a completely different point of view to any other fictional account I had read. Choosing to write an account of Christ's life from the point of view of Jesus was incredibly daring... and I would have thought technically impossible from a believer. To be sure, many people can write an "historical Christ" from their own particular point of view (Jesus the homosexual, Jesus the married man, Jesus the revolutionary, etc etc.) But for someone to write an unapologetically gospel inspired account of Jesus from His point of view was unprecedented. I must admit, I expected her to fail.

Instead this account kept me enthralled. I read the previous book, and found the gentle tender account of childhood moving, but this book staggered me. The account of the temptation in the desert, the wonderful plot of the marriage at Cana, and it's significance, building through the book, and the sheer loveliness and humanity of her portrayal of Christ... this is a beautiful book.

Somewhere on line someone mentioned that Anne Rice had written a "tetralogy" of Christ... so far I've only found two books. I'd very much like to read the rest, if she's written them, or if they've been published.

I'm an ex Catholic, and surrounded as I am by very fundementalist protestants I often find myself yearing for more of the Christocentric liturgy of my childhood. I think Anne Rice has written a truly Christological book. I'm sure that she has been attacked by people who are caught up in trivia, and miss the big picture, After all, Jesus said, "look to me, all you ends of the earth and be saved." He didn't say "worship me in just this way or I'll smite you for all eternity.

I adore Anne Rice and I'm fascinated by her quest to write Jesus's story, from his point of view. It's inspired, and while this book is a bit slow and makes you question if you are sticking with this just because it's Anne Rice, it really is worth it if you have any sort of religious curiosity. I have to say, this book made me see Jesus as a man, rather than Christ the Lord, which is surely what the Bible tried to get across! It feels much more "real" than the stories I learned at school. It's very thought provoking, but still feels like a warm-up to the main action. If she writes at this pace, it's going to take decades before we get to the resurrection! But, Anne, I applaud you, and I look forward to the next installment. Rather this than some of the self-indulgent, lengthy prose you've written in some of the latter Vampire/Mayfair stories. Bring on the feeding of the five thousand!

I was disappointed with the earlier chapters and feared that this novel would degenerate into a minor soap opera of everyday life in first century Galilee. My experience of Anne Rice`s novel sequences is that they begin brilliantly but then steadily decline. I feared that this would happen again. I particularly disliked the introduction of purely fictional characters, especially after Rice had done such a great job of introducing Jesus`s extended family in OUT OF EGYPT.
My fears were groundless. Rice knows exactly what she is doing. When the narrative reurns to "Gospel" incidents - the baptism in the Jordan, the temptations in the wilderness, the Cana wedding the story comes together beautifully. I`m now looking forward to volume three.

I found this book in the shop at Bangkok airport, read it from cover to cover on the flight and wanted more. I wish that I had had my bible with me for reference. Anne Rice has uncovered the real difficulties of being human and living with humans. The consequences of our actions, even the slightest act, either good or bad and it's repercussions in a small community. I loved Jesus before reading this, but I now can visualise the man, magical.

The second of her Christ the Lord novels, based on the Gospels and Pseudepigrapha, and told in her fluent and convincing manner. There may be a few modern colourings but the story is well told and the dramatic tension is well maintained.

I thought this was a very interesting take on the life of Christ whilst remaining true to the gospels. The first person narrative attempted to give us an insight into how Jesus gradually became aware of his intended ministry. I know this is fiction but nonetheless I thought it a powerful and inspirational novel

I enjoyed this book immensely. There is no doubt that Anna Rice has a wonderful way of expressing the inexpressable. A story well told of the possible life of Jesus leading up to the first miracle which took place at the wedding feast at Cana.

I enjoyed this so much that I passed it on to others to read.
