Venetians generally eat prima colazione (breakfast) like most Italians a quick espresso or cappuccino taken with a brioche or pastry, often consumed standing up at a bar. Italians drink espresso at all times of the day and night; in fact, the response to a request for un caffè is an espresso. Cappuccino is only ordered by Venetians before 10:30 A.M. but it is fine (though tourist-like) to do so after this time. It is considered uncouth to have milk in your coffee in the evening. If you order a latte, be prepared for a glass of steamed milk; order a caffè latte if you want coffee mixed with steamed milk. You will often see a Venetian start the day with a caffè corretto (espresso with a small shot of grappa or other liquor), or a tumbler of amaro (a bitter, herbal digestive). It is not uncommon to see the first ombra (small glass of wine) tossed back as early as 8:00 A.M., especially in the Rialto market where some of the vendors have been awake for hours, making 8:00 A.M. considerably later in their day than it may be in yours. Croissants are also called brioche, briosca and cornetti; they come con marmellata which almost always means apricot jam, or con crema, with a custard filling. Whole-wheat croissants with blueberry filling, flaky almond pastries and krapfen deep-fried puffs of dough filled with jam or cream - are other popular choices in pastry shops and bars. Hot tea, hot chocolate and sometimes fruit juices are available. If you do not see fresh oranges and a juicer you may well get a bottle or can of juice. Standing up at the bar is universally the least expensive way to have breakfast. Extra charges are usually added if you sit at a table and/or are served by a waiter. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

La Serenissima is infamous for tourist trap food so to avoid this problem you need to research the subject well. With a copy of this book the hard work is done for you.
It's format is easy to follow and the book is a pleasant read in it's own right, the authors are clearly in love with this most magical city.
The book is strong on bars as well as restaurants ranging from the simple to the grand with just about something for everyone. The clear directions and good maps will ease your way to each establishment.
Gelaterie are not forgotten and the list of shops and supermarkets is invaluable for those who are self catering. There are useful links at the back of the book to help you organise your trip as well as a list of the authors favourite non food shops.
The glossary will help you to order the correct food once you are in the happy situation of being seated at a table in a restaurant that you know will not disappoint.
Updates are available on line and the book is light enough to carry around with you all day whilst in Venice.
I urge you to get your copy whilst you can for it will enhance any trip to Venice and most definitely will also save you money simply because you are able to eat like Venetians do.

There is a mouth-watering introductory section with guidance on what specialities to look out, very useful for a first timer. The main section reviews recommended bars, cafes and restaurants, usefully divided into geographical areas so you can easily plan an itinerary to fit in with sight-seeing. The enthusiasm of the authors for good food and for the city of Venice shines through on every page.
The reviews of bars and restaurants are completely honest and reliable, not only for the quality of food but also for the ambience and helpfulness of the staff. We didn't have a single bad experience in visiting any of the places recommended in the book. The excellence of the food and the friendliness of the people we met are all part of our happy memories of this beautiful city.
Whether this is your first or fiftieth trip to Venice, you won't regret buying this book.
The price guides and descriptions of restaurants are accurate, so much so that you can usually spot the owner or particular member of staff just from the books description. The bars are just as good, make sure you ask for a "spritz" when trying some of the places listed.
In our 4 days we only ate outside of the guides recommendations once. All the bars and restaurants we visited provided good quality food at really reasonable prices.
The authors obviously have a great love of Venice and the Venetians, but a realistic view all the same, and this constantly comes through in the entry contents.
Don't go to Venice without this book if you want to eat good food in local company, and the prices aren't bad either. Don't forget to see some of the sights while you are there, as this book can make you just want to find your next place to eat of drink! Finally a tip is to check out the website the authors run, before you visit, to get updates on entries
