This is a phenomenal book which hits all the points that other puppy books miss out. It discusses the 'right time' to get a puppy, in your life, and explains exactly HOW (and where) to find a puppy from a responsible breeder - something which most puppy books don't cover. The perspective or angle is extremely up to date and current, and does not just refer people to the Kennel Club or breed clubs - it is so refreshing to find a mainstream book giving these views and not just regurgitating the same old stuff.

One constant thread running through the book, is that of the health of your prospective puppy - and why this should be something taken into consideration when choosing a breed. Most other puppy books just contain pictures of cute puppies and almost seem to be afraid of offending puppy buyers in their shying away from any controversial issues. Pippa Mattinson does not do this. She explains why seeking a puppy of certain breeds is probably best avoided if you want to be sure of purchasing a healthy dog - which can enjoy life and not run up huge vet bills. WOW that someone has finally published a book with this material in it, for new puppy buyers.

She then explains why, if you STILL want a puppy from a breed with exaggerated features, purchasing a puppy from breeders who show their dogs, may not be the best way to find the most healthy puppy - due to dogs which are bred for shows frequently having the *most* exaggerated features.

As a trainer and behaviourist, I wince when people enrol their bulldogs, pugs and dachsies in my classes (to name a few breeds).

I was given an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
What a fantastic, well written book. If you are thinking about getting a puppy, this book is a must read, even if you think you know what breed of dog you want.
The language Pippa has used is easy to understand which some authors get too technical. I loved the different colour coded sections as you can find what you are looking for easily. When I brought my Labrador 3.5 years ago, I didn't really have much knowledge about breeders, what to ask/look for and I think I was just lucky with what dog I have. After reading this book I will definately do things differently next time. I love the section that looks at popular breeds of dog and the advantages/disadvantages of the breed, including an honest opinion from Pippa as to whether or not that breed would be suitable for a family/single person etc. I liked the recapped summary at the end of each section as it is written very well and is honest.
Another fantastic book by Pippa Mattinson.

If you are thinking of buying a puppy, this is the book to read before you make your final decision. The book is easy to read and clearly set out with useful headings and many colour photographs. The colour-coding of chapters at the page edges is handy in enabling you to flick through to find the section you want.
The book’s early chapters cover things that everyone should consider before getting a puppy. A puppy’s needs are outlined and the demands on an owner’s time are explained. The main part of the book looks at twenty popular breeds in some detail, expanding on their individual characteristics. This could be a great help to a would-be owner in deciding whether a particular breed suits their circumstances.
The health of each breed is considered in some detail and potential problems highlighted. For each breed the available screening tests that the puppies’ parents should have are specified, as well as the test scores that a purchaser should be looking for. The author does not pull her punches in stating her view that some breeds have such big health issues that they should be avoided.
As an experienced dog-owner I enjoyed reading this book (including going gooey over all the beautiful dogs pictured!) and I learned new things about breeds I haven’t owned. For a person new to dog ownership I would definitely recommend reading this before rushing out to buy your first puppy.
I received an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.

This book will be a huge help to anyone thinking about buying a puppy. It goes into detail about lots of things new puppy owners need to know in advance, even before they start their search for the perfect puppy, such as: is now the right time in your life for a puppy? What kind of dog is right for you? What sort of checks should you make regarding the future health of your puppy? How should you go about socializing your pup correctly? How do you find or recognize a good breeder? What about taking on a rescue dog instead? Would a pedigree, cross-breed or complete mix be best for you? There is also a section about some of the most popular breeds, giving information about character, energy levels, the amount of exercise and grooming needed, and genetic health issues. It is clearly written, and very attractive with lovely photos.

We are looking for a puppy and this has been a great help! It gives great food for thought about all of the different things to consider when choosing a puppy - we have a young family, so temperament is really important to us, as is choosing a pup that will be a long lasting family member. The information on health testing, how to ensure that you give your new addition the best chance for a long & healthy life is excellent for anyone that is thinking of searching for a puppy or is looking in to a new breed of dog.
We had 4 breeds shortlisted, so the breed reviews were really helpful & we have now chosen a Labrador. We have also chosen a KC assured breeder & we know that the forward planning & wait involved in our pup joining us is the right decision.
Also loved the background on how the different breeds have evolved over time, simple overview on complex genetics & generally some great advice!
A great read for anyone thinking ahead about having a puppy join the family! I'm half way through the Happy Puppy & looking forward to bringing our puppy home soon!!
