Product Description

Review

'A brilliant synthesis of a complex field of studies…it displays a wonderful mastery of the subject.' (The Times)

'The Chinese Potter remains the best introduction to Chinese ceramics for students and collectors alike. It is one of those rare scholarly publications which is not only well-ordered and concise, but also very readable.'(Rosemary Scott, Christie's)

The author of this book is clearly an expert in her field and it is a pleasure to read. It is an indepth discussion of the technological development of Chinese pottery throughout the centuries, and yet remains accessible also to the casual reader, as the book explains all aspects of the topic including relevant terminology. The only criticism I have is the illustrations are mostly black and white photographs, which makes it difficult to appreciate the colour of the glazes or other details of the wares that she discusses in the text.

Margaret Medley is a highly respected and informed author; her knowledge and experience is obvious and it would be difficult not to find what you are looking for as far as Chinese ceramics are concerned. For me it is a book for those studying and researching the subject, and constantly 'dipping-into' the information.

HASH(0x976ab744) out of 5 stars Chinese to Me 22 Jun. 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Margaret Medley wrote this academically oriented book for the serious collector or connoisseur of Chinese ceramics, but her descriptions and explainations have helped me, a teacher, in understanding the Chinese approach to clay in all of its historic facets. I was fascinated to learn so much about the evolution of porcelain, not to mention the ways of the dragons and emperors!

HASH(0x976abbac) out of 5 stars Comprehensive , but 8 Mar. 2011
By GaryLL - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I was a little dissappointed. I was primarily interested in ching tradeware, but not much on that and no pictures. Also the pictures were all high end/best of. not really usefull for a low end collector like myself. Also more pictures would have been nice to more fully cover styles and types of pieces.
Text is well written and seems complete. But I have only started.

HASH(0x976abb58) out of 5 stars A fairly good review of Chinese pottery 14 Sept. 2013

This is a scholarly review of Chinese pottery. It is fairly well done and my wife found it helpful since she is interested in Chinese antiques.
HASH(0x976abb1c) out of 5 stars Older but still excellent review of the history of Chinese pottery. 2 Sept. 2015

Ms. Medley was the doyen of Asian ceramics, faculty at the University of London School of Asian Studies. Though the book was written several decades ago, and is a bit out of date on certain topics, using older spellings, it is a treasure. Medley writes with authority, yet her prose is very readable. It is a perfect introduction to those who have some knowledge of Asian history and ceramics and wish to learn more without tackling an academic treatise. I especially appreciate that, in comparison to some scholars who write solely from an academic viewpoint, Ms. Medley obviously had hands-on experience with pottery making. She makes comments and conclusions only as one who has actually thrown "green" clay can derive. Her narrative is in chronological order, and explains the evolution of pottery, kilns and porcelain in the context of Chinese cultural history. The book truly is a "practical history" meant for the interested lay person.
