Product description

Product Description

'China Lane' is the debut album from singer-songwriter and violinist Alice Zawadzki. Written and arranged over five years, it encompasses a rich collection of influences - from ancient Sephardic songs about loss, exodus and prejudice and Bartok-inspired folk stories dealing with young love to Zawadzki's modern fairy tales full of mischief, whimsy, obsession and magic.

The supporting cast on China Lane features a stellar combination of band mates and long-term collaborators from the jazz world - Alex Roth (guitar), Kit Downes (Hammond), Andreas Lang (bass), and Jon Scott (drums) - who each bring playfulness and cohesion to the repertoire.

Alice's compositions range from the trip-hop inspired "Cat" and "Ring of Fire", with its driving interplay between Downes, Scott and Lang that brings the detailed folk melodies into a soulful jam, to "You As A Man" with compositional influences from Steve Coleman's M-Base that intensify the song's poignant lyrics. The album is carefully and skilfully augmented with layers of cello, violin and additional voices; the soaring wordless vocals of Emilia Mårtensson and Fini Bearman together with Alex Roth's tender solo guitar serve to create the cinematic atmosphere in "Low Sun; Lovely Pink Light".

A unique performer and gifted storyteller, Alice Zawadzki's star is set to rise with the release of 'China Lane'. It is a brave and assured debut that takes the listener on a journey of love, compassion, conflict and joy.

Personnel: Alice Zawadzki (vocals, violin, piano), Alex Roth (guitar), Kit Downes (Hammond), Andreas Lang (bass), Jon Scott (drums), Shirley Smart (cello), Emilia Martensson, Fini Bearman (vocals), and others

Review

(4 stars) A many-splendoured collection that pulls you in a myriad of emotional directions...It would be difficult to imagine a finer introduction to Zawadzki's music. --Jazzwise, (Peter Quinn), July 2014

(4 stars) Zawadzki is a genuine original with a pure, pealing voice that can darken into brooding low tones, and twist with the flexibility and harmonic awareness of a jazz singer. She is also a composer of gliding, melodically unorthodox tunes that connect to contemporary classical music as much as jazz or pop, and an expressive lyricist. --The Guardian, (John Fordham), June 26, 2014

(4 stars) Zawadzki is a distinctive and individual presence, both as a singer and as a writer, and her own diverse background and immersion in different cultures makes for a compelling and entrancing listen...This is inclusive music that deserves to be heard. --musicOMH, (Daniel Paton), June 10, 2014

(4 stars) Evocative vocals and lyrics combine with inspired improvisational passages to create something enchanting and unique...This is a superb collection of songs that draws upon many influences yet ends up sounding distinctive and unique. --The Jazz Mann, (Ian Mann), July 8, 2014

Zawadzki, with her highly expressive voice, can switch at will from sounding like a pop singer on the title track to immersing herself in the Sephardic folk of 'Dicho Me Habian Dicho', in equal measure and to considerable effect. --Marlbank, (Stephen Graham), May 25, 2014

Two tracks of traditional Sephardic songs, forcefully and meticulously delivered by Zawadzki, both with strong percussive arrangements, and with outstanding strings on 'Dicho Me Habian Dicho'...captures the distinctiveness and breadth of Zawadzki's musical endeavours in her career so far. --Bebop Spoken Here, (Debra M.), May 30, 2014
