Product Description

(2013/East River Records) 21 tracks. While Robert Crumb is most famous as the single most influential artist in the history of underground comics, he's also known as a record collector and serious fan of vintage jazz and blues, freely acknowledging he has no interest in anything recorded after 1936. Jerry Zolten, a well-respected music historian and professor at Penn State University, is a fellow record collector who is friendly with Crumb, and in 2003 the artist was a guest on Zolten's radio show on Penn State's radio station WPSU-FM. Chimpin' the Blues preserves 60 minutes from Zolten's show, with Zolten and Crumb playing some of their favorite rare 78s from the '20s and '30s and discussing the music and the people who made it. The music featured here is an eclectic and engaging sampling of early blues and jazz.

Bought as soon as advertised believing that Robert Crumb was playing on the disc. On delivery I learned it was two friends exchanging stories about the music - totally fine with that BUT we need a second disc without the commentary. Played it twice and its on the shelf 'til I reduce my collection and this will be first in the box for a charity shop.

I've been a Crumb follower for many years and have aways found his musical taste highly interesting and entertaining. It's a radio vinyl experience you can visit on a rainy Sunday afternoon... Plus the art work is well worth the money.

HASH(0x9e1c8b04) out of 5 stars An hour with R. Crumb and his rare 78rpm blues and jazz records. 16 Dec. 2013
By Steve Ramm - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Musician and blues record collector John Heneghan (who with his musical partner Eden Brower) for the core of the East Side String Band) has the enviable luck of calling cartoonist (and 78 rpm blues collector) Robert Crumb a close friend. Crumb as created the great cover images for the four ESSB albums and has been Heneghan's guest on Heneghan's weekly internet radio show titled "John's Old Time Radio Show". So leave it to Heneghan to make a 2003 radio program from 2003 which was produced by a radio host (and ANOTHER 78rpm blues record collector!) - Jerry Zolten - for the small 1700-watt college radio station at Penn State University, available for the first time in 10 years. The show - titled "Chimpin' The Blues" consisted of Crumb visiting Zolten with 11 of his rarest, as well as most entertaining , records and chatting with Zolten between the discs being played. It aired on a few public radio stations (via the Public Radio Exchange) but hasn't been available since. (By the way "Chimpin'" is a word that Crumb created that means "chewin' the fat" or just discussing old records.)

The first time you listen to the CD, you'll play it all the way through and find it an educational experience; these guys know their facts (and Crumb knows the lyrics to most of the records in his collection) But , because the CD has the music tracks separated from the dialogue, you'll be able to return to the album to hear great songs by artists you probably never heard of (but should) performing hukum' blues, jug band blues and "happy" blues. No, there are no Robert Johnson or "down and out" blues here. But there are lots of banjo and ukuleles. You'll hear Eddie Head and Family sing "Down on Me" (from 1930), the record that inspired Janis Joplin's hit recording., and the original "Walk Right In" (from 1928) by Cannon's Jug Stompers, the basis for the Rooftop Singers' chart-topper in the 1960s. The transfers are superb and hardly a scratch is heard.

The 55-minute long album (with ANOTHER great Crumb illustration on the cover) contains an 8page booklet of liner notes by Zolten along with reproductions of the colorful record labels for the titles played. Not only are the albums that Heneghan is releasing on his East River Records label, entertaining, but the Crum cover gtra graphics make you want to file them with the covers showing, creating your own little "R. Crumb Art Gallery.

I hope you found this review both informative and helpful.

HASH(0x9e1c8d44) out of 5 stars You'll listen to the discussion once, but the music many times 9 April 2014

Interesting discussion with R. Crumb. Tracks are set up so talking is separate from music, making it easy to copy just the songs for future listening. Excellent choices of music from old 78's only had 2 of these songs on other collections. To my ears Geeshie Wiley's "Last Kind Words" is the most haunting old blues song and the highlight of the collection.

I bought this for my hubby for Valentine's Day. He loved it. It's a wonderful collection of blues. (Full disclosure: Jerry Zolten is a dear friend, but if we didn't like this CD, I wouldn't lie about it. I would just say nothing.)

Jerry and Robert have conversations about the selections on this CD, that add interesting insight to the musicians and their music. It's great to listen to people so passionate about their interest in this great music from a bygone era.
