This is a remarkable and I believe exceptionally good recording from the massive back catalogue of Bill Nelson. Bill is the one formerly of Be Bop Deluxe not the Republican senator from Texas on a google search! His recorded output is well known to be colossal and of course by this it has necessarily been of variable quality. After all he can't have good ideas all the time and he does do everything himself (from the music to production to artwork). He is a very talented guy but you get the feeling that every now and then he just needs someone honest around to tell him to file one or other track, sketch or poem. However on Chimera Bill just hit every nail right on the head even down to the minstrel poseur on the cover. It originally appeared in the mid eighties when his artistic flame was in partial recession from the dizzy heights of BBD and his neatly dyed hair was a lot thicker than it is now. At the time I bought several copies of this to give to non-musical friends and they all loved it. I can still hear why it was such a revelation now that it has reappeared on CD.

Originally an extended EP it was released in the USA as Vistamix (I think!). This is the original and best UK version and it is a simply a wonderful driving sound from its time.

Buy this as one tiny example of a truly gifted and multi talented artist. You really will enjoy it and catching Bill live will surprise you. You wouldn't think he could be a pensioner in a few short years and he has a lot of ideas left in him yet. He was and is a chimera indeed and a man who manages change with remarkable adeptitude.

For me, this is one of Bills' most accessible works. Even though I'm a huge Nelsonian I will admit that some of his stuff is really only for his diehards. "Chimera" however was a wonderful album and has been one of m favourite BN releases for over 20 years. Eons before musicians thought of "collaborations" with other musicians around the world, our Bill was already doing it. His mate, YMO's Yukihiro Takahashi recorded some drum tracks in Tokyo's Alfa studios mailed them to Bill in England and he recorded over the top of them to create some stunning musical landscapes. "The Real Adventure" swoops and soars and YT's drums still sound fresh and vibrant all these years later. The original version of "Acceleration" is also here (as are the excellent US mixes), plus some other vintage Bill such as "Tender Is The Night" and the fantastic "Another Day, Another Ray Of Hope".

This remastered edition has been augmented with the aforementioned "Acceleration" remixes plus the excellent "Hard Facts From The Fiction Department". A marvellous foray into cutting-edge sampling technology from 1983. This track was originally only available to us Aquitted By Mirrors members many years ago. The original CD version of "Chimera" came with the whole of the "Savage Gestures For Charms Sake" instrumental album and it's a shame that those tracks aren't included here. Then again, Bill's instrumental legacy is another thing entirely...

With over 50 albums to his name it's not too easy to point the curious at just one album and say "try that!". However, I think this is one of the ones I would choose.

Damn near perfect.

The 1983 mini album expanded with a further four tracks. The starting point for these compositions was drum loops supplied by Yukihuro Takashi of the Yellow Magic Orchestra. Bill Nelson then composed and built up the songs over the loops. This is one of the funkiest ( a word I don't usually associate with Bill ) Nelson recordings. It still sounds like solo Bill Nelson though – you always get sound piled on sound on his recordings (in a good way though), innovative use of synths, e-bow guitar, and tape cut-ups. This is good stuff with contributions also from Mick Karn of Japan and Bill's brother Ian. Something that's often overlooked is how good a lyric writer Bill is. His words lend his work a peculiar romanticism as evidenced here by the beautiful “Another Day, Another Day Of Hope”. If you absolutely must compartmentalise this then I suppose it's vaguely post punk.

When this came out I spent ages trying to convert my schoolmates (who were all into Classics Nouveaux, Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet) over to Bill Nelson. "This is what Modern music should sound like! PLUS It's got that bloke from Japan on it!!!" They were unimpressed with Bill's falsetto and the weird time signature change in Glow World. So I gave up. I bet they all meaningfully punch the air at Coldplay gigs now, the boring gits.

Not being particularly a Bill Nelson fan as such I came to this from Sound On Sound (Album)/Furniture Music/Do You Dream In Colour/Rooms With Brittle Views and some sessions from John Peel (YouTube). The Real Adventure I picked up on straight away and the rest of the album I found equally good. As my musical tastes were set in the 80's it's great there are still many gems like this to be discovered.
