Chill Out by Jana Richards my review

Review Courtesy of April Hollingworth

A wonderfully sweet book, it had me chuckling and at one point (maybe two) I had tears fill my eyes. I found Renata and Noah completely fabulous, and don't get me started on Spike (the English Mastiff), who's such a big softie all you want to do is give him treats and tummy rubs. This book comes alive while you're reading it. Everything about it is just magic. A must read story for anyone who loves good books and the hope of happiness. Loved it.

The Review:

Renata Cabral is determined to hide away from her large, extended family on her cousin's Valentine's Day Wedding. She doesn't want to be asked questions like "Why aren't you married yet?" And she most definitely doesn't want to be matched up with someone and paraded as through the wedding as the unmarried one. So instead she invents a work-related excuse and escapes to a friend's lakeside cottage.
After two years of hiding from his brother, Noah Brownlee is finally ready to come home and mend their broken relationship. When a friend offers the use of his lakeside cottage to him, Noah arrives with his English Mastiff, in the middle of a blizzard, only to find the cottage is already occupied.
With Renata's big brown eyes and quirky sense of humor, Noah finds himself feeling things he thought long since dead. While the blizzard rages, the candy hearts predict love. Will Valentine’s Day work its magic between them, or will the chill from the blizzard forever freeze the broken hearts?

This is only a short story but is packed with humour, friendship, love, snow & a dog!

Take an empty cottage in the middle of a snow storm .. fill it with two strangers who are hiding from reality & sparks are bound to fly!
Neither are interested in a relationship & both have their reasons for being there .. can they reach a compromise & get along for a couple of days until escape is possible!?

I really liked Noah, Spike was adorable & Renata grew on me .. the candy heart sweeties were a cute touch. If you are after a quick romantic story that is easy to read & enjoy then this is for you. As it’s part of a novella series for Valentine’s Day I will be keen to read the others .. this can be read as a stand-alone though.
Thanks to the author & Bewitching Book Tours for the opportunity to read this in exchange for my honest review.

Renata is taking refuge in her best friend’s cottage – using it as a much needed escape for a few days. Unfortunately, Noah had also been allowed use the cottage and Renata is loathe to give up her weekend just because some guy happened to be there as well. Can she chill out when they’re both snowed in together?

This is an interesting “snowbound” style book. I found both Renata and Noah’s characters to be layered and complex, which was a big help since the book really did center around them with very little supporting cast. I found the “two steps forward one step back” style of the story a little frustrating at times. While it was perfectly understandable both Noah and Renata were a little prickly – they both have pasts and in their own way were running from their lives and themselves – after the first few times of one of them cutting off or shutting down on the other it got a bit repetitive. It was clear they were both interested in each other, and while Noah was prickly and secretive and Renata had been burned in the past they seemed to run very hot/cold with each other and this sent plenty of mixed signals – to each other but also to me as a reader.

Readers who like a slower pace with plenty of give-and-take between their hero and heroine should find this to be a good read. I thought there was a good length to the “getting to know you” period between Noah and Renata and they each shared plenty of themselves and their history while the attraction grew steadily between them. The only real conflict was the sometimes prickly interactions between them when one or the other closed off a bit emotionally. The plot was very character-centric – more than the first half of the book revolved around them learning about each other while snowed into the cabin. There was also only the one sex scene, so readers wanting a bit more spice might find this slower pace and less physical style of romance a bit slow. I personally found it satisfying, but not overly descriptive so I feel it shouldn’t be too much for most sweeter styled romance readers.

Overall I really enjoyed this story. For the most part I liked both Renata and Noah’s characters and while I got a little frustrated with them both a time or two it was a real pleasure to read about them finding love together and filing the empty place in each other’s lives.

Okay, I confess I’ve become a fan of Ms. Richards. I find her writing warm, humorous, entertaining, and clean, and "Chill Out" did not disappoint. Exhausted from her drive, Renata crashes on the couch as soon as she arrives at her friend’s cabin. She awakens to someone kissing her ear and finds a huge dog in her face, accompanied by a hairy hulk of a man. This was not her idea of escaping from the world on Valentine’s weekend.

Having just returned from a stint with Doctors Without Borders and acquired an English mastiff, finding a woman in the cabin he borrowed from his best friend was not Noah Brownlee’s idea of great, either. But they’re snowed in, so they may as well tolerate each other. Besides, Spike likes her, and in their brief time together, Noah’s learned to trust Spike’s instincts.

As I said above, Ms. Richard’s characters are engaging and fully-drawn. She truly does peel back their layers, but she does so with warmth and humor, and in this case a little bit of magical candy. But don’t take my word for it. Buy "Chill Out" and enjoy it yourself—especially if you want to escape on Valentine’s Day.

Chill out is a great title for this story. When you put a man and a woman hiding out together, and you add in a huge dog, Spike who seems to be fond of Renata, things get very interesting. Even though they have different reasons for hiding out they decide they might as well enjoy themselves. She hadn’t planned on being snowed in. Noah is sending all kinds of signals and Renata thinks he isn’t interested in her. Little does she know he is fighting himself not to make a move on her?

When Noah finally gets the nerve up to call his brother, Renata is there to support him. She is a caring person and he wants to know more about her. His brother doesn’t answer but does call back. He agrees to meet Noah and once the snow is cleared away Renata and Noah go their separate ways.

Noah will need to decide to go after Renata if he wants her in his life. Renata wants Noah too but is afraid of rejection.

I really liked this story. I highly recommend it.

Cute and Sexy.

Renata is hiding out at her friend's cabin to avoid a wedding she doesn't want to attend when she is invaded by a man and his dog. He is to be staying at the cabin while he gets his life in order. Due to a snow storm, they are stuck together until the roads are passable.

The story is intriguing. I liked it, but felt there was a lot of room for more info and back story that would have given me a greater connection to the two. Both characters have histories that had potential for more. The little bit you get to know Noah and Ranata will make you wish you had more history and got to see a lot more fun interaction between the two. The dog and the candy hearts are wonderful touches that make the story endearing. I'd love to see this develop into a full novel. This story was worth reading; a great way to pass an afternoon. I received a copy of this story in exchange for an honest review.
