Product Description

An all-too-brief introduction to art for the younger set.Alexander and Hamilton have previously teamed up on titles in the wonderfully accessible and affordable "A Child's Introduction to"? series. This lively and kidcentric entry highlights 40 big names, mostly European and male artists (Michelangelo, Pierre-Auguste Monet, Diego Velazquez, Vincent Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, etc.), in a series of two-page spreads grouped thematically. The book's handsome design captivates with an inviting cover and appealing 10-inch square trim. Though very heavy on the classics of European painting and sculpture, Alexander's accessible and readable text effectively combines with Hamilton's fluid, ink-and-watercolor vignettes and well-chosen reproductions of "signature" works. Further enlivened by intriguing, informative sidebars on theory, movements and techniques, it also features many related hand-on projects. A few very small nods of recognition to Asian, ancient Greek and Roman, Egyptian, African and Native American art are offered?though at 96 pages one could hardly expect an inclusive, definitive resource. And it is light on diversity: Mary Cassatt is the only woman receiving a two-page spread, and Jacob Lawrence is the sole African-American painter. But then the only other Americans among this artistic Top 40 are Winslow Homer, Jackson Pollock and Andy Warhol.Limited scope notwithstanding, this is terrific for browsing, thinking, dreaming and art-making. (index, timeline, removable coloring sheets) (Nonfiction. 9-14)"

HASH(0x9ec9b798) out of 5 stars Some of the paintings will give your child nightmares 1 May 2015
By Anna P. - Published on Amazon.com

Two painting reproductions made me question what was going through the head of the author: one of cadaver dissection by Rembrandt, and one of the firing squad execution by Goya. Sure, those are great paintings, but do they really belong in a book intended for 7 year old children? Couldn't the authors find some examples of Rembrandt and Goya that wouldn't give kids nightmares?

Overall, the book is average; there must be much better and more comprehensive art history books for kids.

Art History as well as simple lessons that go along with them. This is a very nice book and a nice addition to our home school studies. My granddaughter is in the third grade and these lessons work well for her grade level.

HASH(0x9fb8db4c) out of 5 stars Great Artist Info Book 2 Mar. 2015
By Laney - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
I purchased this book mainly for my 10 yr old son, but I have two girls, aged 16 & 14, that will be using it as well. We just received it today, and we were looking at all the artist and information. I'm so happy that I bought this book. It's full of great information and art to show children ...and adults! My son was so excited to learn about some of the artist.
