A 'must read' for all parents of aspiring performers. An all encompassing, comprehensive, informative and intelligent guide. Brilliant! --Sylvia Young
...the book makes a splendid job of debunking many of the mysteries in what, for many parents and children, is a very strange, unknown world... it's evidently written from the heart - on what parents should and should not do...excellent. --The Stage

Children in Theatre made me laugh, the stories are so true and are very sweet. Everyone should have a copy.
When my children performed all those years ago I was so sure I really knew what I was doing now I am aware how I probably must have been very tiresome at times it isn't always so easy for us parents to see this though, but reading Jo's book it is very evident now how I could have conducted myself better.
I must say the part about some parents turning up late to collect their children is so true. I remember waiting in the pouring rain with a young boy whose grandfather had forgotten the time. This was at the time when mobile phones were not around only phone boxes. The grandfather was really embarrassed and very apologetic when he finally turned up in the oldest car I had ever seen. I must say that mistake was never made again.
The information in this book is also clear about auditions and how the children should conduct themselves during rehearsals. It is a real pocket bible for everyone.
Well done Jo Hawes for writing this book. A really enjoyable read.
It is great to finally have something we can read, and get answers to the questions we had, and realise some of the questions we shouldn't have asked lol ! As being a new to all this and just going along with what our daughter wants, we sometimes felt we wanted to ask a question but were being a bit of a nag and a nuisance. A big lesson we are learning is NOT to listen to gossip a the stage door, as you clearly state in your book! So a big thank you from us for putting the book out there to get the correct advice!
Its a good insight to realise how much goes on behind the scenes and the headaches parents can cause!
I would highly recommend to any parent who is considering supporting their child's dream to perform in Theatre.
Thank you Jo Hawes!
Packed full of of excellent 'to do' and 'what not to do' tips and guidelines to parents and children who are considering auditioning for professional theatre, and then go on to working in professional theatre. It made me laugh, gasp and cry! an absolute must read. I really enjoyed it and couldn't put it down once I started reading it.
