From the Artist

exellent sumary of our work
this album gives a very good picture of all sides of our group and proves that we came up with tracs vastly superior to what we are usually assotiated with,if we hadnt been damaged by extremly "dodgy" chart placings with Rainin thru my sunshine (which sold 40,000 copies in one week and went down ) The force album would have gone thru the roof, and established us rightly as a heavywieght band, British soul bands do not get 2nd chances. However we are more than pleased with this CD it makes a strong point. Eddy Amoo

Yep like Amoo says this gives an excellent round up of the Real Thing's sound, Strong vocals thoughtful music and some great grooves. Certainly if you like Earth Wind and Fire you'll find something to appreciate here. The first couple of tracks were big hits here, and they're classics of the late 70's.The track that is worth the asking price alone is the absolutely majestic Chldren of the Ghetto medley which is why I tried the album out. When I bought the Blaxplotation cd series on CD I heard the track by Maceo Parker, which I thought was OK, and I wondered if it was the same track. Well yes and no- the original track is as superior to Maceo's as any track can be.It combines absolute first class deep, inspired and moving funky/jazz beats with some of the finest vocals of the genre bar none. If Real Thing had recorded anything else that came nearly as close I think they would have been revered as the best UK bands of the 70's. BUT alas it wasn't to be, that kind of stuff was no longer as popular in the late 70's and obviously more concerned about hit records the rest of the music is slightly generic and dare I say it ever so slightly cheesy in that late 70's way.Dont you just hate it when record companies get ahold of great musicians and water them down and sweeten them up for pop consumption?

First of all let me set something straight about this collection. Amazon's track listing here is incorrect and the track entitled 'Going For The Big One' does NOT appear on this collection. What this collection DOES contain however that will be of interest to collectors are various 12" versions. 'Can You Feel The Force', Boogie Down (Get Funky Now), 'She's A Groovy Freak' and the rare and sought after 'I Believe In You' are all the full extended versions. For hardcore fans of the band there are also some of the groups very earliest recordings on cd 1 in the shape of 'Watch Out Carolina' and 'I Want You Back'. Then of course there is the sublime 'Children Of The Ghetto' (in full album medley mode) and some great album cuts along with the obvious hits.

The colour booklet makes for a very good and insightful read (featuring as it does an interview with Eddy Amoo) but there are a few factual errors in the text ('She's A Groovy Freak' was NOT included on the album 'Saints Or Sinners' for one). All in all though, this is a really good, intelligently compiled set that makes for great listening and is one that will have you digging out the bands other recordings. A fine tribute to a great and very hard working band.

Question? How did 'Rainin' Through My Sunshine' only manage to barely scrape into the top 40? What were we all on! HA HA

The real thing were the group when I was young..... now my son and grandson are able to enjoy their music that was so politically and musically ahead of its time. As a pensioner I am also re-living the fun and fury of the times..... unfortunately things have not changed that much making this record fresh and funky once more. It needs a bigger audience!!

The only track that's missing for me is "Street Corner Boogie", which I can only find on cd in a series called "Masterpiece- Ultimate Disco/Funk Collection" (series 7). This seems to be a VERY rare track that I can only find on vinyl as a single.
When a Real Thing hits cd is compiled including this song, only then will I give a 5* score.
