...to balance the other review of this record. Having received this today, and given it a couple of listens, I must say I really enjoyed it. Sure the ballad "Down The Road" has a vocal arrangement that could only be filed under "a good idea at the time"...but having said that, there is much to like on this...specifically the killer remake of "Child In Time" that tones down Gillan's vocal histrionics that made the Deep Purple version so memorable (or painful, to some) in favour of atmospherics and groove. But the real gem on this release is the sprawling twelve minute closing track, "Let It Slide" - a staggering song of beauty, power and guitar and keyboard brilliance. That said, my favourite part of this whole release is the outstanding drumming.

Like most, this slipped by me, when workin my way back throw the Deep Purple off shoots,my loss its a really excellent disc.As has been said over the years,Gillan was exploring R n B and Jazz Funk with the Ian Gillan Band(IGB to you and me),god i loved that logo.

Boasting decent liner notes and pretty good sound ,this is well worth the money. Tracks 1 - 5 are destined to play second fiddle to the two epic tracks but they are excellent, particularly 'Lay Me Down' with its Purpleish Keyboards and the insistent throb of 'You Make Me Feel So Good' with a few trade mark Gillan screams.Feel the groove of 'My Baby Loves Me',of its time yes but wonderful all the same.

Side 2 of the original disc contained the title track a quite superb remake,a brave move but if your open minded you'll love it,that just leaves the star of the album 'Let it Slide',top notch guitar playing from Ray Fenwick, indeed the whole album showcases what talent these musicians had.

Obviously Ian Gillan would burst forth a few years later with 'GILLAN', i'm not sure he ever made an album quite as uplifting.

Maybe this is tinged with nostalgia - I bought the vinyl more than 30 years ago. I'd already gone through the shock of buying IGB's Clear Air Turbulance on the strength of Gillan's association with Deep Purple, only to discover this jazz/funk thing going on. I persevered, & ended up buying all the rest of the IGB stuff.
This one has Child In Time, the song, on it of course, & once you accept that you're not going to get a 300mph Blackmoresque guitar solo it's great.
Side One is a little more disposable, with 5 tunes leaning heavily towards the jazz/funk direction; the exception is the last one, Down The Road, a beautiful ballad that could maybe do better without bassist John Gustafson's wailing in the verses.
Side Two is just a pair of songs - Child In Time, a decent, vallid, new interpretation, & the brilliant 11-plus minute Let It Slide, a real mood song with some great atmospheric work from the band, especially Ray Fenwick's slide guitar.
Gillan returned to rock two years later of course, & if you buy this expecting something like MkII Purple or the Gillan albums you're in for a shock. But if you give it a chance it's worth it.
