Although I'm sure that most of the abuse happened as written. I'm a little dubious of some aspects. Dave says he was stabbed, made to breathe in toxic fumes, and other forms of torture.
My main question is, considering that at least two methods (I.e stabbing, which comes across as severe, and life threatening.
And fumes, which would have resulted in long term damage to the throat) were not noticed by anyone outside the family. The methods are talked about, but then the narrative quickly returns to the sitting in the basement or garden routine.
As a result, I'm left wondering how much is truth, and how much was added due to anger, or his mind coping, by adding bits on.

It is beyond the depths of imagination what this boy went through. But he fought and thank gd made it in the end. I first read this book in my late teens but never forgot it and now many years later I had to read it again. Heartbreaking but such strength.

Abuse is abuse, intended or unintentional, the impact is the same. This story is as much a monumental failing from society as much the mother. Children should be default happy, unless something is known, but this case supports out indifference and failings. I hope the next two offer some compassion.

This book is one I read many years ago and it stuck in my head. Dave Pelzer tells the story of his horrific childhood. I'm about to start book 2 in the trilogy. Praying he's rescued.

Oh my goodness, what a heartbreaking and incredible story. What happened to David is unthinkable and his bravery is inspirational. My heart broke and I wept throughout this entire book, which I read in one sitting. I will be reading the follow up books, mainly in the hope of finding out what the repercussions were for this evil woman.

This was a book I could not put down once I started reading I could not believe how a mother could be so cruel to her son. I had to purchase the following two books and read both, I have now sent them on to my friend to read .

My citizenship teacher recommended this book, and as it sounded interesting, I bought it. I started reading it, and could not put it down. I read it in 2 days, and sometimes I felt like crying at how horrible Dave's mother was.
You know the feeling when you watch a horror movie and you can't look? Well that's how I felt with this book sometimes. Some parts were so gruesome I couldn't look and I had to close the book for a few seconds before I continued reading.
This book makes you thankful for you family, and it makes you realise how bad some children are treated.
You should DEFINITELY read it and you will look at your life differently!
