'I am a child of books,' a little girl declares. 'I come from a world of stories.' And so begins this enchanting tale of a little girl sailing away on a sea made, literally, of words as are many other things in her book-centric world. Words are fashioned into the shapes of mountains, a monster, a dark cave, and more as the girl is joined by a boy on an adventure that dramatically demonstrates the freedom of imagination. Jeffers and Winston s first collaboration is a celebration of the child s world, illustrated in sumptuous double-page spreads featuring explosions of images borrowed from unforgettable sources...Every one of its elements the haunting prose poem executed in hand- lettered words; the pictures done in watercolor, pencil, and digital collage; and the objects built from words borrowed from classic stories all work together toward a richly harmonious whole. An irresistible invitation to read. --Booklist (starred review)
It s a hymn of books, reading and stories, a unique reading experience and an inspirational gift for book lovers young and old. --The Bookseller
From the Inside Flap
From New York Times bestselling author-illustrator Oliver Jeffers, creator of The Day the Crayons Quit and Lost and Found, and typographical artist Sam Winston comes an exceptional new picture book.
I am a Child of Books. I come from a world of stories, And upon my imagination, I float.
In this inspiring, lyrical tale about the rewards of reading and sharing stories, a little girl sails her raft "across a sea of words" to arrive at the house of a small boy. There she invites him to come away with her on an adventure. Guided by his new friend, the boy unlocks his imagination and a lifetime of magic lies ahead of him. But who will be next? Elegant illustrations by Oliver Jeffers are accompanied by Sam Winston's astonishing typographical landscapes, beautifully shaped from excerpts of children's classics including Treasure Island, Little Women and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, creating a gorgeous gift book perfect for readers of all ages, and this year's must-have Christmas gift.

The actual story of this picture book though is the girl leading a boy along the path of literature, showing him that the world is built upon such stories, that we are made from stories, and that imagination and invention give freedom, and are borne from freedom, and give equality. It's a lovely message, that imagination is free, and we are made from the stories we imbibed as youngsters, but although it's a whimsical, lovely book to read and look at, I wonder how much a child would glean from the pages - whether it would become a well-thumbed book for little ones, or whether it's more aimed at me - an adult who adores books.
An interesting concept, well-executed. This book was sent to me for review by the publishers.
