I ordered this having been a knitter for a couple of years, I decided to learn to crochet. I didn't want to make 70's type stuff and this book is full of funky & modern clothing and accessories. I have mastered the basic stitches quickly and have started on my first project. It guides you through using different patterns with increasing complexity and I would definiately recommend it if you want to learn and make some gorgeous things for yourself and others. Lots of useful tips and hints too - enjoy!

I taught myself how to crochet using this book and have managed, using what I learned here, to progress to more complicated patterns elsewhere, but I still return to this book time and time again because I think it has some of the easiest to follow instructions in any learn to crochet book I've seen. I also own another book on learning to crochet which I use a lot less often because although some of the projects in that book are different and things I am interested in making, the instructions weren't nearly as good. The projects in this book are things you'd actually want to make and use, and I've made many of them as gifts for other people. I think my only complaint would be that there seemed to be a lot of project patterns for jumpers/garments. Some more variety in things to make would have been better, but as a starter, it's excellent.

terms.

The pattern on the last page of the book contains errors I did the last pattern of a pink top down cardigan several times and the numbers in the neckline do not add up to the numbers quoted by the authors. I did check my tension three times.

This book is very good. It is comprehensive, easy to follow and has superb illustrations, which make you want to get on and learn the steps to make everything. It takes you step by step with the stitches, making something at every stage which really helps with the learning. Just beware that some of the American stitches are named differently from the English! It's ok following the patterns in the book where they are all American, but for English patterns you can look up on the internet for a conversion. I was a complete beginner, have just completed the first project and am very happy with it (I didn't try felting it in case I ruined it!)

I bought this book for my mum after failing miserably at teaching her how to crochet. I wanted something that had great pictures and diagrams and that was easy to understand and this is perfect - the proof is in the pudding and my mum has now started her first crochet project :D

This book is full of very good illustrations of "lessons" and the items one can make are very encouraging - not just "squares for blankets" etc. !! A great read for absolute beginners.

Positives; I bought this book for a specific pattern and there are many other lovely patterns in here. There is some useful info on yarn and finishing garments as well. I liked the overall feel and layout of the book.
Negatives; I'm not sure how someone could learn to crochet solely from this book although I see from reviews people have. I wouldn't have been able to, there is not enough detail in it. Also, american terminology which caught me out and I have been crocheting 3 years.
I am nearly finished the pattern I bought the book for and my biggest gripe is that they don't put the number of stitches you should have at the end of every row, so difficult to check your work is accurate.
