Review

A beautiful memoir about how keeping hens led the author to understand herself more (Natasha Harding THE SUN)

Years ago, Alice Walker and her family kept chickens. Today, she once again realises how special these animals are and takes on a brood herself. A touching memoir from the writer of The Color Purple (5 star review STAR)

If you're looking for something a little different to read - a book with a poultry theme but without all the usual 'how to' content - then perhaps you should consider The Chicken Chronicles (PRACTICAL POULTRY)

The Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Color Purple, recalls growing up in the deep south of America where her family kept chickens - for meat and for eggs (TNT MAGAZINE)

Surprising and profoundly uplifting ruminations (SCOTLAND ON SUNDAY)

Like a latter-day Uncle Remus, with heart-warmth and candid humour, Aunt Alice tells stories and gives character to the likes of Babe and Hortensia, Glorious, Rufus, Agnes of God and (of course) Gertrude Stein (SAGA)

this book is a warm memoir chronicling Alice's henkeeping journey (COUNTRY SMALL HOLDING)

This fanciful memoir has charm and originality, especially when Walker is reminiscing about her early childhood when her family lived in a grey shack papered with flattened cardboard boxes and brown paper, and grew or bred most of their own food (THE TABLET)

Format: Paperback
This is a charming little book, musing on life, the universe and chickens! It's a divertissement but does have some interesting thoughts on what we might learn about life from studying the behaviour of other animals. Would make an attractive little gift for many people, especially if they kep chickens. It is most assuredly NOT a manual on how to keep chickens.

Format: Hardcover
This is a collection of the author's loose thoughts and reminiscences delivered as if musing to her chickens.

The author's narratives are repetitive vague commentaries mainly around meditation, faith and oneness. Entries are typically a couple of pages long and are either "Mommy is going away dear chickens, Mommy will be gone for a long time, Mommy will pray", (going where, and why, is never mentioned, nor is her subsequent return), or "It was long ago, dear chickens, but I remember" (with the actual remembrance barely mentioned).

There are no pleasant chicken anecdotes here, and the poor animal husbandry (even taking into account the culture the book reflects) was a little hard to stomach at times.

An enjoyable read about her relationship with her chickens. The book is more about her musings which aren't pulled out further. Just as Alice gets into something she just seems to end the chapter. Alice touches upon some interesting issues relation to human behaviour in connection to various issues, mostly nature, but I didn't feel I was getting her true feelings or argument.
