3.0 out of 5 stars nice to have 20 Aug. 2013

UPDATE Oct 2013: Man I just didn't realize how much information would be missing since this doesn't cover the diesels. I'm just trying to locate information for typical service. No such luck if you've the diesel. I knew this, but realizing it is worse than I thought it'd be.

Original REVIEW: I prefer Haynes over Chiltons because they talk to me like I'm an idiot. I prefer Chiltons over Haynes because they don't treat me like I'm an idiot. Huh?

Chiltons is geared towards the pro. Haynes towards the novice. Or, like me, the reluctant backyard mechanic. I don't really enjoy working on cars anymore. Haynes will give alot of useless information, but there's alot of important details in there too. Sure you could just look it up on line and I usually do. But when you're right there under the hood you can have the book open next to you. For about $18, yea, I'll do that. I especially like the torque numbers they list. Awesome for a guy that likes to snap bolts.

As for Chiltons, a bit over my head. Haynes is a bit under my head. But since cars are no longer designed with the backyard mechanic in mind I figure that if Haynes doesn't cover it then I probably shouldn't be doing it (based upon my abilities).

I suggest for anyone that does anything more than oil and lube to pick up a Haynes for any vehicles say 4 or more years old. If you're without a laptop you can place outside then you'll be glad you've got the info right there with you when you need to work on it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Manual for 2001 Tahoe 3 Nov. 2009
By Jason Golod - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I have a 2001 Tahoe LS with the 5.3l motor...this is a decent manual that I have used a number of times for servicing the braking system, replacing shocks and soon sway bars. Essentials like torque specs are all listed in the appropriate areas. There are more pictures than I anticipated, but you can always use more. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, a repair manual! 20 April 2008
By J. Walters - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I bought this manual for two reasons:
First, because the owners manual didn't describe in detail what should be greased as part of the regular maintenance.
Second, at some point I'll have mechanical problems with the truck and I wanted to have this manual on-hand when that happens.

I learned a lot from this manual relating to maintenace an inspection.
What I didn't expect was the tutorial on nut and bolt grades at the beginning of the book. It made for a good read ;)

4.0 out of 5 stars Certified GMC Dealer approved 30 April 2012
By Scott McCorkle - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Being the owner of a GMC dealership, I am constantly looking for ways to improve my business and customer service. This book has done both for us. The certified GMC technicians that I have employed at my dealership are very enthusiastic about how in depth the repair manual is. Many of the technicians I have on site use this book as a reference guide for any and all repairs. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking to make repairs on their vehicle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why Didn't I Buy This Years Ago 17 May 2012
By Earth Spirits - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I wish I had bought this years ago for working on my Silverado. Not only have I not been able to put the book down, but I have learned many new things about general auto mechanics and am very excited to be working on my own truck. Knowledge is power and this book has a lot it to offer. Good stuff in here for the beginner to the professional. If your a bit nervous or feel less than comfortable doing small repairs and or servicing your own truck then this book can take a lot of the mystery out of it. I would highly recommend it to anyone with a 1999-2006 model Silverado or Sierra.
