I really enoyed this story. I have read some criticisms of the characters in other reviews and I am glad I didn't listen to them.
Luke wants Cassandra so badly that he has her father and brother thrown in jail and attempts to trick her into being his kept woman. Having been sheltered by her family and educated by nuns Cassie is naive to Lukes scheming and to the man he has become, a man brought up in a brothel uncared for by his mother and abused by the clientel. Now wealthy and used to getting what he wants, he wants Cassie.
Will Cassie find out his true character, can he become the man she thought she married? Read on and find out.

How do youl deal with witnessing the rape and murder of your family members and friends? You are torn out of a perfect, save and sheltered environment and thrown into one that you are totally unfamiliar with and unprepared for ... this is what Rebecca faces when the treck to move her church's community from the East to New Mexico goes all wrong. Ex-gunslinger Race saves her from the same fate but will he manage to help her salvage her faith and self-esteem? And how does he cope with his growing feelings for her, both emotionally and physically, when he represents everything she has been taught to reject?
This is the second Catherine Anderson book I've read and I absolutely loved it. I read a lot of romance and suspense romance novels but this one clearly stood out. Yes, there was a good deal of unpleasantness happening but given the time period and location, it all tied in. Race is an outstanding romantic hero: strong, capable, decisive - yet he has hang-ups about himself, is extremely sensitive towards Rebecca's fears and even able to challenge his own viewpoint. It is not just a love story but also a story about God and faith, and being a Christian myself, I felt that Ms Anderson dealt with the subject of violence, how it can affect your faith and self-esteem, and the clashes of secular and religious standpoints admirably. There is also a good deal of humour in the book and a couple of rather steamy love scenes between Race and Rebecca. Now, Rebecca might not be the strongest and most independent romantic heroine to start off with, but considering her upbringing and background this ties in well. Also, the way that both the hero's and heroine's characters develop through their interaction with each other is very well balanced and realistic. I simply love this book and for me, it's definitely a keeper.

Okay, so this wasn't a horrible book, but it was frustrating to read. The subject matter, including rape, murder, and beatings, was intense and created a pervasive sense of doom. Understandably, the heroine reacts to the trauma in her life with fear and crying spells, however, the extensive focus on this prevented the relationship between the hero and heroine to be developed and explored. The hero sees the heroine in the midst of the carnage of rape and murder and immediately falls in love with her waif-like beauty. She in turn falls in love with his strength and ability to protect her. While the heroine does gain some strength at the end, it would be nice to read about a woman who has experienced violence or trauma and was able to overcome it and become stronger, more competent and independent on her own, or with a man's support instead of because a man protected and took care of her. While I did finish this book, I must admit I did so with relief that it was over. I have read other books by this author which I have enjoyed, this just wasn't one of them.

I LOVED "Annie's Song" and "Simply Love" but this one didn't grab me as much. I hate reading a couple hundred pages before something signigificant happens between the two main characters. The love was there, it just took forever to be realized. I'm starting to see the "formula" behind Anderson's books, and it's getting old.

In 1868 Southeast Colorado, while on a cattle drive, former gunslinger turned rancher Race Spencer comes across the recent massacre of eleven pious people plus their oxen. The killers are still in the vicinity but left the immediate area because they saw him coming. It appears that they were looking for something among the cheek-turners' items, but Race could not understand what that is and why they were so violent. Race saves the life of the lone survivor, Rebecca Morgan, who remains in shock from the ugly incident.
The outlaws follow, but Race and his men protect Rebecca from the vicious outlaws, who will do anything to obtain the money that Rebecca's murdered father was transporting from Pennsylvania for his church. Race brings Rebecca to his ranch to recover. While there, they fall in love, but he knows he must stop the outlaws who are after the money she carries and somehow prove to her that a lady can love an uncouth person like him.
CHERISH is a beautiful love story filled with two wonderful characters having to overcome their traumas to find happiness. The story line is filled with an authentic feel that brings to life the violence of the era. Catherine Anderson is a great writer because her poignant western romances bring the readers along for a colorful ride.
