"Fantastic! Once I picked it up I could not put it down." WG
"I am reading your book with increasing and deepening pleasure... not dissimilar to that which nearly came your way when the lady so generously put you beneath her skirt! I am constantly amazed at the extraordinary detail which you seem able to recall and the elegance and elan with which you express it. The breadth of coverage and the description of both urban and rural life during a period which scholars are only now coming to study in detail is profoundly impressive. Where else in the canon do references to Das Rheingold and classical Greece rest comfortably alongside detailed descriptions of lamb castration and the perfidiousness of all manner of bacteria and fungi, to say nothing of a sideways swipe at the ghastly Freud. How many of today's kids will be in a position to write such a detailed account of their early days? RM-C
"Well - that was a good read. Congratulations on two scores in particular, your prodigious memory and the considerable amount of research that you obviously did in a variety of spheres - I hope a lot of people will read your book." DE
"The book is a head turner when being read at 29,000 feet over the Atlantic homeward bound from Madeira. Well, the tears were rolling down my cheeks and laughing out loud in a confined space can be disturbing for others. What happened to your trousers eventually?" SW
