Well Lizzy does it again.... another fantastic start to what I can only imagine will be another superb series, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I really enjoy a good shifter book, never expected a large scaly, fire breathing beast to be so sexy. Go figure, I wants me a dragon of my very own.. Hmmm!.

Full of her usual brilliance, the story follows Chace the last dragon shifter and his pursuer Skylar the last dragon slayer, oh when these two collide the sparks fly, the chemistry between them is so hot. Chace is sooooo moody, well 1000 years is a long time for a cursed soul, but when he meets Skylar, his pesky little dragon slayer, cute as a button, full of wit and as frustrating as hell, he finds life a little more interesting again!! I loved these character and was hooked from the first page. Can't wait to see where it all leads.

I find myself very surprised to have ended on 4 stars for CHARRED HEART, since I was *this* close to DNFing it at the beginning. I didn't like how quickly the hero and heroine jumped into bed together. We're talking chapter three, after speaking maybe 20 words to each other. No build-up whatsoever, just straight to it. Where's the romance in that? I really didn't care for it and was convinced I'd never be able to connect to them as a couple after that. And so my hand was hovering over the big, red detonate button. BUT! I am very glad I didn't in the end because the story actually turned out to be really enjoyable. In fact, I liked it so much I've already bought book 2!

Lesson to be learned from this: Sometimes it pays to give books a chance past a slightly dodgy beginning.

So. The set-up. You have one-thousand-year old dragon shifter, Chace, whose tired of his endless existence, and of watching every human he grows close to die. He seeks out the help of an elusive supernatural whom he hopes will be able to reverse the curse that made him part dragon, and allow him to live out the rest of his mortal life as a bog-standard human.

Then we have Skylar, a dragon "slayer", even though she's never actually slayed a single dragon because Chace is the last one in existence. There's a whole bunch more to her story, and finding out everything that happened to her was the most enjoyable part for me.

Skylar and Chace spend most of the book in a sort of sexual haze, only occasionally coming up for air long enough to realise something ain't quite right. For example, if they're supposed to be natural enemies, what's with the crazy chemistry the two of them share?

I received an ARC of this book, in exchange for an honest review**

First off, I have to say 'Fantasy' is not my genre of choice, so Charred Heart was a little outside of the box for me! But boy, was I impressed!

Charred Heart had me hooked almost instantly, and kept me captivated through the entire book!

Chase - our loveable dragon, is 1000 years old, and has had enough of losing everyone that's close to him. He's moody, he's brooding and he can sometimes come across a little self-centered. But there's definitely a lot more to him, and once you get past his brick walls, he can actually be very caring, thoughtful and oh yeah... SUPER FREAKING HOT!!!

Skylar - An awesome name for an awesome character. She's strong, but vulnerable, feisty, a little mouthy and she definitely gives Chase a run for his money, always giving as good as she gets. I loved her!

There were times I just wanted to bang Chase and Sky's heads together! They went back and fourth over a few things, a fair bit - some things that to me, seemed so very obvious, and actually had me shouting at the book, on a few occasions!

There was a good mix of action, plot/back-story and romance. At times, I couldn't read quick enough! Everything just flowed together so well and the multiple elements of mystery and suspense had me awake into the early hours, two nights in a row - desperate to get my answers!

The ending of Charred Hearts had me literally groaning out loud! Although it doesn't end with a shock and awe moment, it still has the cliffhanger element to it - There is obviously a LOT more of Chase and Skylar's story to tell! But that's cool, I just can't wait to get my hands onto book two, as soon as it's released!

Thank you, Ms Ford, for opening my eyes to a genre that I would normally avoid!
Who knew dragons could be so sexy?!

Yet I'm strangely drawn to purchasing Charred Tears. I think both Skylar and Chace are quite flawed and not immediately loveable to me. Yet I think that this shows some humanity in them both. Skylab comes across as particularly gullible I mean I know as an outsider looking in it's more obvious but who captures and potentially kills people just because someone else says they are dangerous? Despite all evidence pointing to the contrary. Though maybe under the circumstances (which we find out later in the book) that is what would happen. Chance seems very self-centered but by the end of the book he really starts to turn things around and I'm looking forward to following his journey. All in all this is not my favourite of Lizzy Ford's but wad certainly worth the price.
