One of the one-liners selling this one was "It's perfect froth for whiling away a few hours on the sun lounger" - I really couldn't put it any better. If you read "Something from Tiffany's" there aren't any surprises here - the same likeable kind of characters, the search, the misunderstandings, the boy meets girl story taking a while to come to fruition... I'm making it sound like I didn't like it, but I really did. Melissa Hill writes fluently and easily, a cut above a lot of other chick lit, and there's enough that's different about this book to make it stand out from the pack. I loved the vintage clothes store setting, Holly's imaginings about each piece of clothing, Greg's career change + the obnoxious girlfriend, and the excellently engineered ending. It leaves you with a nice warm feeling - and it's a perfect holiday read.

Holly O'Neill is living in New York, and loves her job working at a vintage store. She adores the clothes, and the stories each of them holds, and loves nothing more than making up tales for her customers about the clothes. When she finds a charm bracelet in one of the items, she's intent on reuniting it with its owner - not least because she has a charm bracelet herself which is very precious to her. Holly doesn't know who sends her the charms for her bracelet but each one represents something in her own life that is significant to her. Holly sets about the impossible - giving the bracelet back to its rightful owner without any real information to help her. Are the charms going to be the clue to giving it back to the person it belongs to?

I was thrilled straight away to see this book was set in New York, one of my favourite places in the world. Readers of Melissa's books will know her last book, Something From Tiffany's, was partly set in NYC so clearly it's a fond place for Melissa too. What I really loved about this book was the complete focus on the two charm bracelets that are so important to the stories - Holly's own bracelet, and the one she finds in the shop. Holly's story is told both in the present day, but also through the charms she has on her bracelet. Each one represents an event that is significant in her life, and as she ponders the charms, we are told more about her story, and her bringing up her son alone. It really allows us to get to know Holly well, and she was such a well created character, she was a joy to read about. She's a great, positive role model as a single mother as well which I really enjoyed reading.

The Charm bracelet is a relatively gentle tale, which gets stronger as it progresses. Holly, who works in a vintage clothing shop, discovers a charm bracelet in the pocket of a jacket which has been sent to them to sell. It is similar to one she owns herself, but since each charm represents a significant event in life, it appears the owner of this one has lived a much longer and fuller life than Holly since there are so many charms on it as compared with hers.

Holly realises that the owner of the bracelet must be distraught at having lost it and sets out to find her. Since each charm has its own unique story behind it, there are plenty of clues to work with. Interspersed with the main story are sections of flashbacks which describe the circumstances in which charms were acquired, either by Holly or by the owner of the stray bracelet.

This is an interesting scenario to craft a story around, and this book does work well on several levels. The quest to reunite bracelet and owner is a mystery in its way and builds as clues are investigated and followed to the next hint. It is an interesting study of people, particularly of Holly and her son, Danny, both of which we come to know quite well as the book progresses. There is also a fair measure of romance, and although the eventual outcome is fairly clear from about the halfway point, I did not feel this spoiled this tale in any way.

I thought the ending of the book was really well done and quite subtle. It would have been so easy for the author to have finished off in a much more obvious and clumsy fashion, but clearly a lot of thought went into this. The Charm Bracelet does take a while to get going and for the building blocks of the story to be put in place, but this is one of those books which increases in intensity as it progresses and at the end I looked back on a story which I certainly enjoyed.

Time and time again on our facebook group everyone keeps repeating the same name Melissa Hill and every time I say no sorry I have never read any books by this author everyone is so shocked. So when I was approached to read and review her new release The Charm Bracelet how could I refuse, it was time I found out what all the hype was about!

Holly works in a vintage dress store which relies on donations but one day whilst sorting through a donation box she feels something in the jacket which has been donated and she soon comes across a beautiful charm bracelet. Holly has a charm bracelet of her own which has a number of charms on it each one symbolising a moment in her life and as she carefully looks at the charm bracelet she has found she feels that this charm bracelet also has a story to tell. Holly finds herself on a complicated mission to return the bracelet to its rightful owner as she tries to unravel the clues that each charm presents.

Greg decides to pack in his job and follow his dream of becoming a photographer but unfortunately his excitement of the start of his new career is short lived when he breaks the news to his partner Karen who is less than pleased at his decision.

This really is an amazing book. The author creates such a perfect main character in Holly who, juggling work with bringing up her son alone, felt like a very down to earth and believable character. I really felt that the heart strings were being pulled in this book especially when the book changes to the owner of the bracelet telling her story I was on the edge of letting out a little sob as it was so moving.
