I was thrilled straight away to see this book was set in New York, one of my favourite places in the world. Readers of Melissa's books will know her last book, Something From Tiffany's, was partly set in NYC so clearly it's a fond place for Melissa too. What I really loved about this book was the complete focus on the two charm bracelets that are so important to the stories - Holly's own bracelet, and the one she finds in the shop. Holly's story is told both in the present day, but also through the charms she has on her bracelet. Each one represents an event that is significant in her life, and as she ponders the charms, we are told more about her story, and her bringing up her son alone. It really allows us to get to know Holly well, and she was such a well created character, she was a joy to read about. She's a great, positive role model as a single mother as well which I really enjoyed reading.Read more ›
Holly realises that the owner of the bracelet must be distraught at having lost it and sets out to find her. Since each charm has its own unique story behind it, there are plenty of clues to work with. Interspersed with the main story are sections of flashbacks which describe the circumstances in which charms were acquired, either by Holly or by the owner of the stray bracelet.
This is an interesting scenario to craft a story around, and this book does work well on several levels. The quest to reunite bracelet and owner is a mystery in its way and builds as clues are investigated and followed to the next hint. It is an interesting study of people, particularly of Holly and her son, Danny, both of which we come to know quite well as the book progresses. There is also a fair measure of romance, and although the eventual outcome is fairly clear from about the halfway point, I did not feel this spoiled this tale in any way.
I thought the ending of the book was really well done and quite subtle. It would have been so easy for the author to have finished off in a much more obvious and clumsy fashion, but clearly a lot of thought went into this. The Charm Bracelet does take a while to get going and for the building blocks of the story to be put in place, but this is one of those books which increases in intensity as it progresses and at the end I looked back on a story which I certainly enjoyed.
Holly works in a vintage dress store which relies on donations but one day whilst sorting through a donation box she feels something in the jacket which has been donated and she soon comes across a beautiful charm bracelet. Holly has a charm bracelet of her own which has a number of charms on it each one symbolising a moment in her life and as she carefully looks at the charm bracelet she has found she feels that this charm bracelet also has a story to tell. Holly finds herself on a complicated mission to return the bracelet to its rightful owner as she tries to unravel the clues that each charm presents.
Greg decides to pack in his job and follow his dream of becoming a photographer but unfortunately his excitement of the start of his new career is short lived when he breaks the news to his partner Karen who is less than pleased at his decision.
This really is an amazing book. The author creates such a perfect main character in Holly who, juggling work with bringing up her son alone, felt like a very down to earth and believable character. I really felt that the heart strings were being pulled in this book especially when the book changes to the owner of the bracelet telling her story I was on the edge of letting out a little sob as it was so moving.Read more ›
