Charlemagne and Louis the Pious: The Lives by Einhard, Notker, Ermoldus, Thegan, and the Astronomer Hardcover – 1 Jan. 2009
Purchase options and add-ons
Carolingian historical texts have long stood at the base of our modern knowledge about the eighth and ninth centuries. The ninth century gave birth to a new revival of secular biography, which has come to be recognized as one of the brightest bands in the spectrum of Carolingian historical writing. This collection brings together, for the first time in one volume, the five royal/imperial biographies written during the Carolingian period.
Thomas F. X. Noble’s new English translations of these five important texts—Einhard’s Life of Emperor Charles, Notker’s Deeds of Charles the Great, Ermoldus Nigellus’s Poem in Honor of Louis, Thegan’s Deeds of Emperor Louis, and the Life of Louis by “the Astronomer”—are each accompanied by a short introduction and a note on “Essential Reading.” Offering details on matters of style, sources used by the author, and the influence, if any, exerted by the text, Noble provides a context for each translation without compromising the author’s intended voice. By “reuniting” these five essential medieval texts in an English translation, this volume makes these voices accessible to scholars and non-experts alike throughout the Anglophone world.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 April 2013I have not read all of this yet; but as the title states it includes the Medieval Lives of Charlemagne and his son Louis the Pious. The two lives of Charlemagne have been translated sometime ago, and were readily available in Penguin translation. The three lives of Louis were not readily accessible in English translation. Each of the Lives has a brief translation, covering the history of the text and what is known about the life and motives of the author. The book manages to convey an important historical fact; for much oif the modern period, Charlemagne has been portayed as a great and heroic Frenchman, German, or European; and Louis as his wellmeaning but incompetant and ill-advised son, who undid most of his father's work. For their contemporaries both were important and in medieval terms successful monarchs. Louis is judged by his failure to manage his sons, but Charlemagne had difficulties in this area, as did a number of other highly succesful medeival monarchs, Henry II of England, being a good example. Penn State press have published other medieval source books such as Foulke's translation of The History of the Lombards by Paul the Deacon, The Chronicle of Theophanes, and Maurikes Strategikon; the latter two previously very diffiocult to get in English translation. The book is pitched at those who want to deepen their knowledge of Carolingian history, and students undertaking degrees in medieval History.

Norm SmithReviewed in the United States on 30 November 20105.0 out of 5 stars The definitive collection of lives of early Carolingian rulers
Thomas Noble has gathered all of the essential contemporary or near contemporary Lives of Charlemagne and Louis the Pious into one slim volume. While the lives of Charlemagne by Einhard and Notker have been around for a long time in Penguin paperbacks, and Thegan's 'Life of Louis' recently became available in "Carolingian Civilization: A Reader" by Paul Edward Dutton, the new translations of the "Vita Hludovici" by the Astronomer, and "In Honour of Louis" by Ermoldus Nigellus, are are alone worth the price of the book.
Strongly recommended for those interested in early Carolingian history.
