Product Description

Review

"The balance between writing a textbook and simply collating a collection of case studies is well met, making this title readable yet without sacrificing detail. Each case is well laid out with diagnostic images and pertinent illustrations and tables."

Contact, Spring 2010

Format: Hardcover
This book starts by attempting to describe how to take a history examine spinal pain patients with many examples of CT's and MRI's, it then goes into some details on how to deliver a report of your findings. The problem is that I found it quite confusing and unhelpful. The book does assume that you already have a certain amount of knowledge about anatomy, physiology and pathology which I do, however the text at the start of the book is not easy to follow.
The book then goes on to describe real life back pain cases, divided into sections - lumbar, cervical etc. Now I understand that these are supposed to challenging pain syndromes but the cases are laid out in such a way that it is not possible to test your knowledge. He does not give you the information that you need in order to attempt a diagnosis; there is some history but the physical and orthopeadic findings are never in depth. Ultimately every case that I have read so far has been X rayed and most have been sent for CT and/or MRI and these have led to the diagnosis - and the diagnosis is always extremely obscure!
I found that the quality of the images is not great so really you just have to take the authors word for it. In the end I found the cases to be repetitive and I abandoned this book as a study aid which is a shame as it was an expensive book.
