This is the first anthology from the group since 'Between Mondays' in 1987, so 'unexpected' rather than 'long awaited' might be closer to the mark. It's an eclectic mix of poetry and short stories which demonstrates the strength and variety of the group's work at present, ranging from the angry energy of Ruth Clemens' 'Warning', though the mystical pastorality of Matthew Curry's 'The God of the Woods', to the satirical whimsy of Neil McCall's 'Jimmywocky'. The work is alternately challenging, beautiful, funny, enlightening and disturbing. Well worth a read if you want an idea of what's going on in Manchester writing at the moment.
If you like to read beyond the famous names and see what a traditionally creative area (Manchester) might be churning out next, you can read these writers here, first.
