Unfortunately it's let down by poor writing and editing. Every page is packed full of information and dates appear after every name or snippet of historical fact but this also proves to be part of the book's downfall. I can't help but feel that the whole thing is a rushed collection of information collected from the Internet. A note on the inner flap of the cover could go some way to explaining this: '[The Author] is currently devoting himself to a monumental History Of Art.' I feel that he is stretched for time and has got a first draft published as a book.
It also mentions that the Author has written numerous works on the history of Great Cities. this comes across clearly in the book as too many historical facts of cities that get mentioned are crow bared into the text.
I was looking forward to reading this book but have to admit that I gave up at page 103. It just doesn't flow, at best it's just a cold collection of facts not particularly well edited.
The pictures are full page reproductions and the quality is excellent. Some photographs seem to have been taken under a raking light but I like the way that this effect emphasizes Soutine's brushwork.
It's printed on high quality smooth white paper and is a joy to browse through. It's a shame that the standard of the writing falls well below every other aspect of the book.
The writer also has the annoying habit of repeating words or snippets of sentences in close proximity to each other: such as starting sentences with 'During this period' or 'During this time' etc.
It's not a case of the writing being 'Art Speak' or 'Too Academic' it's just that, as I have already mentioned, it's all a bit cold. I actually found the book easier to read if I just picked random paragraphs as I browsed.
If I had seen this book in a shop and picked up on the issue with the writing I would still have bought it because it is so beautifully presented and as a source of 'cold' snippets of information it's extremely useful.
